Q: New to Tmj - Questions.

Hi,

My jaw has clicked and locked (but only for seconds) for the last 6 months... i didn't really think anything of it, but my mom said I should go to the dentist. Sadly I never did.

Last Tuesday night my jaw locked... and stayed locked. (locked shut, I can open about halfway)

I went to one dentist and he gave me Flexiril and told me to do hot/cold compress. I did that. Nothing.

Unfortunately, my regular dentist is no longer on my insurance so I had to find a new one. I found a new one and went there. After making take stupid xrays that hurt my mouth because I can't open it all the way. He told me that no, its not my wisdom tooth, no i don't grind my teeth, and no he can't do anything for me. He told me to see a TMJ Specialist.

Great.

So I found one that is in my insurance plan and I finally got a hold of them. They can't see me until Sept 27th... that's in 2 weeks. I can't live like this!!!

I am seriously getting stressed out/panic attacks/not happy/pain.

Is there any hope for me? Am I just going to be dicked around for months with no treatment that will work? I don't want this specialist to just give me crap that isnt ever going to work. Can't I just get surgery? Or do they not do that?

I don't know what to do.

Hi there----Of course there is hope for you! If there is anything i can do for you let me know. I can help you find a good doctor in your area that will help you immensly. pm me and we can get started.

what are all your symptoms? do you grind your teeth etc.

You dont want to just hop into surgery. surgery is always the last option. there are several conservative ways of treating tmd and you want to try all those first before even considering surgery. You may have to try one or even a dozen treatments befor you get the one that works. you have to be patient. A lot of us here have been doing this for a very long time. Ive had this all my life and am finally on the road to recovery. You arent alone in this. keep your chin up

pm me anytime. ill be waiting to hear from you.

that is exactly what i don't want!

I really think it would be horrible to do all these different treatments, wait all this time through the pain, and then after however long end up getting the surgery anyway.

It just breaks my heart.

I know that that isnt what you want. However no surgeon will do a surgery with out first trying all conservative methods. that is just how it is done. however the treatment im suggesting has a very good success rate.

I firmly beleive that i can help you. I highly doubt that you will have to go through a ton of treatments like i did. you more than likely will only have to do this one. let me know.

alright. basically i am just scared! luckily i am not feeling constant pain at the moment, only when trying to eat or if i accidentally try to open while sneezing or yawning.

i also am worried because i start a new job in november, on a cruise ship. i am worried that if i need these treatments, like therapy or different splints or whatever i wont be able to go Sad

i do have an appointment with an oral surgeon that specializes in tmj for sept 27th. hopefully that will shed some light on this.

mostly i just want my jaw to open. if we can get it open, i will do the treatments to deal with the other pain/symptoms.

Hi Messicamouse,

First off - RELAX! Your jaw needs your body to relax in order to heal. Basically, something has caused your meniscus (disc) to get caught up in the jaw bones and cartilage/ligaments. Your muscles are now in spasms which don't allow the area to relax and go back to the position it needs to. You now may have some damage, BUT maybe not! That "something" could be grinding your teeth at night because of added stress or an injury of sorts, etc.

Is your jaw still locked shut?? Since your doctor didn't seem to be able to help you, you are going to have to help yourself. First - do anything and everything you can to relax. Hot tub, hard exercise, massage (good therapeutic MT), etc.

The ice rotated with moist heat is essential for any swelling and/or other damage (directly on the joint(s)). You should be doing this several times a day, especially moist heat around the neck (for relaxation). Eat only soft food or even a liquid diet for a few weeks. Do not open your mouth too wide or too long at any one time, also for a few weeks. NO gum chewing or ice eating or eating anything too hard, big, gooey or chewy. Watch your posture closely, especially in front of the computer screen. Do NOT jut your chin out or up, keep shoulders back, down & relaxed.

Flexerill has never helped me, but Zanaflex has, I just can't do anything when I take it. You might also want to consider Valium or Xanax for a few weeks to take at night when sleeping. Getting good sleep is so important because that's when our body repairs itself, but I also know what it's like to be in pain and "trying" to sleep.

You can't give up. You still have a couple of months before the trip. Your first priority should be to get the jaw unlocked (hopefully without "popping" it). I personally don't think you really need to see an oral surgeon just yet. Surgery should ALWAYS be the last option. You gain a whole list of other problems when you have surgery, and jaw surgery in particular does not have a decent enough success rate, yet. You might want to consider getting a bite splint as soon as possible, tho, and it doesn't have to be a "specialist;" just a dentist who knows how to make and adjust them. That's the type of specialist I see (not very often anymore.)

BUT IF your jaw is still locked - you might even consider going to an emergency room (or a dental school), being medicated and then rather forcibly pop the jaw back into joint. After that, you will have to be very careful not to pop it out again by doing the above self-help treatments, etc.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post or even PM me. RELAX!!!

God bless...
Carol

Hey
its normal to be scared. dont let it get to you. remember that you have tmd and that tmd DOES NOT have you. you are in controll. a tmj specialist will find a way to work with your new job. dont worry. relax and things will work out. let us know how you get on.
