Q: Epilepsy & Lamictal & Pregnancy

My daughter has been diagnosed with cortical dysplasia - causing one grand mal and lots of small seizures. She is 5 months pregnant and did not take any meds but the neurologist is extremely concerned and insists she go on meds - he wants her on lamictal. What is this drug like for pregnant women (specifically at 5 months) ...can she breastfeed after?
He insists that the risk of a grand mal damaging the child far outweighs birth deformity risks. Tx for your help

Well,
You could ask a psychiatrist, a commong perscriber of lamichtol as well.
Lamichtol is often used as a mood stabelizer in people without epilepsy.
Maybe a psychiatrist could give you a second opinion.

Are you not comfortable with the feedback the neurologist gave you on your daughter's taking the lamichtol?

We are sure the neurologist is giving us the best advice possible - but we are wondering if there is anyone who has had experience with this drug while pregnant - and also nursing after birth - and other perspectives on the effects of this drug on pregnancy. Tx

Hi

I took Lamictal all during pregnancy. I was told by my neurologist that I had to take a very high level of folic acid (5 mg daily)when I planned on getting pregnant. The reason for that is that there is a slightly higher risk of the baby getting a spinal rupture and hare lip if that mother is an epileptic on medication.
But since your daughter is 5 moths along it's no longer an issue. It's the first 12 weeks of pregnancy that is the problem. But maybe important for future pregnancies?!
I nursed my daughter. I was told that the benefits from nurseing far outweights the down sides by being on medication. So I did that for 13 months!
Lamictal does get into the milk and I suspect it caused some problems with my daughters stomac (she had pain, not a lot but still??). But then again a lot of babies have that problem, so I don't know.

For the future your daughter should be aware of her thyroid gland as the medication for epilepsy can have a damageing effect on it.

hope you understand me ( I'm not a native English speaker)

Best of luck
