ive recently been diagnosed with the bartholins cyst. the gyn has told me he is not going to do anything as its not bothering me at the moment its just there and big. there is no pain and no discharge. i have read on the website about women who have had them and they seem to be very painful and if operated on could be made worse. is this possible should i leave it until it gives me pain or gets any bigger i dont know what to do for the better. thank you louise francis.

Hi!
You've got something thats common in women of reproductive age. You shouldn't worry and leave it as it is. Most of the cysts are painless, grow slowly and may go away without treatment(you can also, notice some redness or swelling in the vulva area)
Symptoms and complications can occur if this cyst get infected. An abscess will be formed in the cyst and you'll noticed that the lump increased in size over several days and is causing sever pain, fever and chills. Pain, usually persist during all activities(siting, walking, sexual intercourse, physical activities)
Than you should inform your doctor. The doctor will choose one of several treatments available to treat the abscess. Usually, women treated with incision and drainage of the cyst aren't successfully treated( cyst reoccurs and can be bigger and very painful) Most of the surgical procedures( cyst wall can be cut, burnt or entire cyst will be remove) should be effective in preventing recurring infections and forming abscess.
To avoid forming abscess, you need to practice safe sex and use good hygiene. If you feel some discomfort you can take some non-prescription pain medication and soak the genital area with warm towel compresses or in a sitz bath.
Wait and watch to see what will happen!
Best wishes!
Marija
