Ok, they have moved my surgery up to the 19th of this month. Im a little worried but I have got to take the chance. I am tired of my limited activities, I am tired of not sleeping because I have to move or change positions every 30 mins or so, I am tired of the lower back pain, I am tired of the burning in my feet and pain and numbness. I am tired of not working. I loved my job, best job in the world.
So although I hear many negative things about lumbar fusion I am going through with it. I have talked to some acqauintances whom I never knew had had fusion and they did fine with it.
I will be able to share the experience with all of you as soon as I get out of the hospital and I will share the recovery in the hopes that it helps others to make the difficult decision to have fusion or not. I know that every back, patient and every surgery, surgeoun is not the same but maybe it will help someone.
I am having L4-L5, and L5-S1.

Hey dude, you know I wish you the best in your upcoming surgery. I realize this was a difficult decision for you, but you have to be free of the pain and the rest of it.

Good luck and thanks in advance for posting during your recovery. That will help others facing the choice you did. Hope you are up and around soon.

Bad news and Good news: I was at the hospital this morning at 4:30am hadnt eaten or had a drink since 3:00 yesterday, I was mentally preparing myself for days and this morning was mentally taxing knowing I was about to undergo a major surgery, IV's in place I was moved down to the holding area and was about 20 mins from the knife when the holding nurse noticed something in my chart that other had apparently missed in the last two rounds of blood test- my blood sugar was 321 on Monday, so she decided to test again and it was 297 this morning even after 16 hours of fasting.

The surgery was cancelled due to the fact it appears I have adult onset diabetes. My doc came in and explained the likelyhood of infection was very high with blood sugar numbers that high and that I needed to get that under control before we moved forward with the surgery. There is no history of diabetes in my family so it just figures it would be me in a family as large as mine that would come up with it.

He asked me a bunch of questions about vision, thirst, frequent night time potty visits, and such trying to confirm the diabetes and it turns out I had all the symptoms.

So its off to the endocronologist tomorrow to see about where I go with this.

Aint life grand?

ohh, sorry to hear that but look at it as a good thing because had they not had found that out it could have caused major problems with this surgery, so hang in there and get this under control and then get ready for the surgery. I too have Diabetes and its not a easy thing to control. So just be patient and stay positive..
