Q: Throat Question

Hi, I've had an issue with my throat that has been going on for a few weeks now. I just moved from southern Japan (hot and HUMID) and lived there over the summer. I'm now in Ohio and within a few days of getting back here, my throat started feeling really tight. At first, I also had a stuffy nose and I started losing my voice. A doctor put me on Rhinocort Aqua and Claritin. I stopped taking the Claritin after a couple of days because it dried my throat out so badly I couldn't sleep. But after taking the Rhinocort for 4-5 days I felt almost completely better, so I stopped taking that too. Then less than a week later, I started feeling the tightness again and got post-nasal drip. I've been on the Rhinocort for a week now, and I took a Claritin a few days ago, but it dried me out again so I ditched that. The post-nasal drip has all but subsided, but the tight throat feeling (mainly at the back of my mouth) continues. It's making me crazy and depressed.

Any ideas what this could be? My doctor said it was hay fever, but I have never suffered from allergies in my life (I'm 22), or that it could be dust in my new apartment. I cleaned my apartment thoroughly and had it checked for mold. I just got two small HEPA filters and started them today, I don't know if that will help. Does anyone have any other ideas? I want to feel normal again so much.

Have you cleaned the air ducts in your apartment? Do you smoke?

There's only a wall unit air conditioner/heater in my apartment, and I cleaned the filter in it and I have cheesecloth over the vents. I don't smoke, and I know that cigarette smoke bothers me (I've developed sinusitis after being in smokers' homes on a couple of occasions before). My neighbor living above me smokes, but he is not home all the time. Also, there is a road right next to the apartment-- it's a little alley, but the cars come within 5 feet of the window.

I've been staying with my parents on and off to see if it goes away when I'm there, and it seems to help a little, but I've had this uncomfortable feeling in my throat for going on two months now. The Rhinocort seems to help somewhat, but I haven't felt "normal" in quite some time -_-
