Q: Molar Pregnancy?

Hi,
I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum in June. I was unsuccessfully treated with cytotec and eventually, after 9 weeks of moderate to light bleeding, my miscarraige was assumed to be complete. I did not pass any clots, did not have any cramping, and I did not have a D&C. Per ultrasound my uterus/ovaries/ect. are all normal. My HCG levels, however, are still elevated. They have been between 16-18 for last 2mos. My OB suggested I may have a molar pregnancy but everything I've read says HCG level increase at rapid rate with that condition. I havent come accross any articles or case studys where HCG levels remain constant. Plus, per previous US, I definantly had a placenta which I'm told most molar pregnancies do not or, if they do, they are abnormal in appearance. The only thing wrong w/ my placenta was that it was empty Smile~ I think it's more probable that a peice of tissue or something is still in there. Is it possible for retained tissue not to show up on a US? What symptoms would I be having If it was an incomplete MC? How long do they take to show up? I feel like I'm sitting around just waiting to get some rancid infection. Off and on I've been having pain to my left lower abdomen/pelvic region, other than that I'm fine. Had this pregnancy been successful I would be 22 weeks by now...I'm getting tired of being poked an prodded and think it's cruel and unusual to be put through all of this for a pregnancy I knew early on was never viable. It's very difficult to move on when the physical situation is not resolved.

I would get a second opinion. It sounds like you need to go ahead and have a dnc. This is ridiculous that your doctor hasn't done this when you still obviously have some tissue left. They should have done it months ago.

My neice had a molar preganancy. She had a d&c and was strongly advised not to get pregnant again for at least a year.

Most leftover tissue is picked up by transvaginal ultrasound. In a situation where a blighted ovum is diagnosed, missed abortion is not uncommon. This is when all the retained products are not passed. If it were a molar pregnancy your doctor would have ordered a D&C for sure.
