Q: Son\'s penis swollen above the head, itchy and burning
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 2nd, 2007
My 7 year old was complaining his private (penis) looked funny this morning. he showed to me and it is swollen right above the head. I had him clean it real good and said we'd take a look later to see how it was. it's about twice the size it was this morning and said it was itchy and burning. What could cause this and should be go to ER or wait until Tuesday to see his Pediatrician?

If your son's penis is swollen right above its head, he could be experiencing foreskin inflammation (postitis). Postitis can be due to an infection, allergic reaction, irritation, trauma etc. If the penis becomes more swollen, painful and disturbs urination you can visit the ER. Otherwise, he can see a pediatrician, GP, or family doctor as soon as possible to diagnose the problem.
