I was pregnant when I was 17 years old and I had a miscarriage. I conceived in September 2006 and miscarried November 2006. My last period was August 12th 2007 and it ended on August 18th 2007. The one before that was February 22nd 2006 and it ended on February 27th 2006. I have been trying to conceive with my husband for the past 7 months and we have had no luck. What could be the problem? And is this cycle normal?

A menstrual ycle that lasts more than 5 months is definitely not normal. Longer cycles mean rarer menstruation (oligomenorrhea) and rarer ovulations. Chances for conception are smaller the less frequently you ovulate.

Oligomenorrhea could be a sign of hypogonadism. Hypogonadism is a condition wherein the function of the axis ovaries-pituitary-hypothalamus decreases. Depending upon the localization, hypogonadism can be primary (ovaries), secondary (pituitary gland) and/or tertian (hypothalamus). You may need to check some of your blood hormone levels: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactin, thyroxin. You can consult a gynecologist who specializes in endocrine disorders about this.
