Q: Emphysema And Alcoholism

Sad hello. My husband is an alcoholic and he had emphysema. He wont quit smoking. He is tired all the time. He is in construction.

My question is what is the prognosis for him. Can he die from emphysema? Isn't there a link to to lung cancer and the liver for cancer??

I am very concerned. He is 43 and refuses to quit. He went to the doctor a year ago and wont go back. He had a chest x-ray which showed spots. He said to me, 2 weeks later about it, and the doctor said he has the start of emphysema.

We were at a wedding and he was drunk. He cried and said he will not be around long. When I asked him what that meant when he was sober, he stated that he just has to quit smoking.

Do you think he has cancer? Do you think he is hiding something from me? He wont see a doctor. He smokes at least 1 1/2 packs a day.

His symptoms are a constant runny nose. Seems like he has a cold everyday. Tired all the time, looks older, face drawn, weight loss, and over all not right to me.

If you have spots, that doesnt mean emphysema. I am confused.

Could anyone help me???

Thanks. I am really worried.

Hi my name is erica. I kope I can help you out a little. Well my soon to be mother in law is an alcoholic and suffers frin severe emphysema. She was diagnosed with it when she was 35 and she is now 45 and quit smoking a year ago. Anyway, her case is really bad. She sits on a breathing machine all day and has to take so many medicines. All she does is cough and choke all day. Doing laundry and just walking from one room to the next is very hard for her to do because of her condition . She just recently applied for social security disablility because she cant even get out to work. And yes you can die from emphysema eventually anyone who has it will. I am not trying to scare you just give you information on what I know of it. My great grandma died from it as well. Also her being an alcoholic as well as your husband only makes health matters worse. She had to have her gull bladder removed and and also suffers form real high blood pressure which leads to stroke. Hope it helps. Good luck and keep in touch. Best wishes. Www.Lungusa.Org ~ erica.

Hi. Did you check out the website? About the arm pain well it could be alot of things.. Which arm is it? Is there tingling or numbness? He has to go back to the doctor. No question about that. And he has to quit smoking because if he does now early in diagnoses it will benefit him in so many ways. The more he smokes the worse his emphysema will get and more damage will be done. He does not have to feel like hi life is over. It is up to him to take control and make the difference now not later. Sit down and tell him how this is making you feel. Have him look on the web about his condition maybe it will open his eyes a little more. I'd love to write more but I am on my way to work now but I will be on later to talk. Think positive as hard as I know it can be. Talk to you soon. ~ erica.
