My husband has had a few of these "strange" episodes and the last one happened tonight. He was playing pool with our son and all of a sudden he felt an "episode" and knew he had to sit or lay down. What happens is that he gets a terrible sharp pain in his rectum area and gets clammy/sweaty and feels like he will pass out. The first time this happened was about 12 years ago and he didn't sit down right away and he ended up crashing into our dehumidifier and cracking a couple of ribs. I remember it looked like he was almost having a seizure. Tonight when it came on, he sat at the kitchen table and he said he had this terrible pain in his rectum and felt like he was going to pass out. He sat with his eyes closed and I went and got a pillow and blanket so he could just go on his knees and lay down. I didn't trust him to even walk to the couch for fear of him crashing again. After this episode, it seems to go away but he is just exhausted. He did see a dr. for this once, but nothing was ever really determined. He is going to a dr. tomorrow, but I was just wondering if anyone has ANY idea of this? He is 45 and has been pretty healthy other than battling with depression. And that was another thing...could depression and this other thing be linked?? Any ideas posted before our appt. tomorrow would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Hi!
For how long the pain lasts? Does he feel pain and discomfort after the episode? Is he experiencing some difficulties during defecation? Does he have constipation problems? Has he noticed blood in his stool?
Very often is difficult to diagnose the source of the pain, because it can be relate with different causes.
It may occur with diarrhea and constipation, or with hemorrhoids. Anal fissure, that occur as a consequence of constipation or sometimes of diarrhea, is causing a pain, because it is a small tear or break in the wall muscles in the area. Spasm and tenderness in the group of muscles that surrounds and supports the anus can lead to rectal pain. Sometimes injured and weak ligaments can cause pain, too. Less likely causes of rectal pain include inflammatory diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, infections, cancer, rectal prolapse and foreign bodies in the rectum.
If your husband has sharp pain that lasts from several seconds to several minutes and after that pain moderates into a dull ache that lasts for hours, probably a anal fissure is involved.
You've mentioned that he was suffering from depression. Has he been treated with medication? If he takes anti-depressants you should be aware that they can cause constipation as a side-effect.
You have probably already visited the doctor. Please, write me back about doctor's appointment.
All best to you and your husband!
