Q: Sign of cancer? reddish patch between my breasts
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 30th, 2007
I've discovered over night a large reddish patch between my breasts that's slightly crusty. It doesn't itch but when I do scratch at it or touch it, it's slightly tender and sore. Skin cancer runs through my family, I was wondering if I should be concerned and seek a physician or if it could possibly be just a rash do to stress (because I have been under a lot lately). I've done research on types of skin cancer and noticed that it's description was a symptom of one kind of cancer, but I wasn't sure if I was over reacting. Could this be a sign of cancer, or just a harmless rash?

According to your description of a large reddish patch that is slightly crusty and tender and sore on touch, it sounds as if you are describing an infection rather than cancer. The typical manifestation of the most frequently occuring skin cancer (carcinoma cutis) is ulceration that doesn’t heal.

Another type of skin cancer is melanoma. Melanoma usually manifests with a nevus-like lesion. But that nevus is usually inflamed, painful, itching, bleeding, more pigmented than usual nevi.

Regardless, the only secure method for diagnosing skin cancer is biopsy. You can contact a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about this.
