Q: Bleeding & ovulation ( re-establishing the mentrual period )

after i had my baby on the 3rd of july i stopped bleeding from the birth about 3 weeks after the birth (7.24.2007) then nearly a week later i started bleeding again lightly which i thought was my period. it lasted a week and as soon as i thought it was over i bleed for the following week VERY heavy. So in all i bleed for two weeks from 7.30.2007-8.13.2007. I had my 6 weeks checkup appt on the 15th and i mentioned it to my doctor and they really didnt touch the topic at all. I was wondering if in fact that was my period or wasnt. Or if you could guide me on what it was. I returned to having sex the week i initially stoppeed bleeding (7.23.2007) and if that wasnt my period im hoping that im not pregnant because i didnt start birth control becasue you have to start it with your period and i havent gotten it yet.

Getting pregnant so soon after delivery is not highly likely because ovulation is suppressed in the first months after delivery due to the presence of particular hormones in the system (produced naturally by the body for breastfeeding). The menstrual "periods" a woman may experience during those first few months after delivering a child, in fact, are not a real periods and can be very irregular. Women who give birth require several months to re-establish their full fertilization ability. That period is longer in women who breastfeed. Nonetheless, you can take a pregnancy test to be sure that you are or aren't pregnant.
