"Current medical status: I am a 14 year old girl, with burning/stomach pain in center of upper abdomen since May '07. Dr. thought this was gastritis from taking steroids/ antibotics in March/ April for pneumonia/asthma. Also Had Mono March/ April. Burning pain is sometimes so bad I cannot breathe in. Negative Abdominal ultrasound. Negative blood test including one for pyloric ulcer. They scheduled me a endoscope but not until first of October. Acidy things do make it worse, however Dr. said if it was Reflux disease the Nexium would have helped.
Current medical treatment: Was on Prislosec rx strength from May til July(no relief) then tried Nexium til now- still no relief"
The only secure diagnostic method for detecting stomach ulcers is a gastric endoscopy (gastroscopy). Blood tests for a stomach ulcer is, in fact, searching for antibodies against the bacterium "Helicobacter pillory". Helicobacter pillory is accused of provoking stomach ulcers. But there are people that experience stomach ulcers without having the bacterium present in their systems and there are other people that have the bacterium, without having a stomach ulcer.
Besides a stomach ulcer, a hiatus hernia can also cause similar symptoms like yours. Hiatus hernias can are also identified with gastroscopies. In the meantime, you may consult your GP about taking some antacids or ranitidine to relieve the symptoms as you are waiting for the gastroscopy.
