Q: Shoulder Injury

3 days ago I was starting my lawn mower, it is one of the pull-cord types. As I was pulling the cord released quickly, I am guessing it was coiled funny, and as I was pulling full strength it let loose. I had immediate moderate pain in my shoulder. I can draw a line across the back of my shoulder around the head of the humerus where it hurts. I have been icing and applying heat for comfort.

History: Same shoulder has had a grade 2 separation and a full anterior labrum tear repaired by open bankart in Dec. 2000.

Does this sound like a sprain/strain or possibly more like a rotator?

Thanks.

Well, first off...injuries are prone to repeat themselves, right? I might suggest that you see an orthopedist to be sure...to check your flexibility and rotation and to examine the location of the pain. It's really worth it to get a diagnosis. Do you think you've injured yourself in the same way?

The previous injury was caused by a fall where the arm was bent behind me and landed on the socket. This one was a complete different motion, and the pain is different. With the original labrum tear my shoulder was so unstable that it would roll out of socket if I lift my arm above my head. This time I can lift it but there is pain associated with it, and can not lift it completely to the side. Mostly what I have seen/read is to give it time to see if it gets better. If not, then I will go to the doctor and see what they think.

Thanks for your reply honey bunny Wink

Sounds like a plan. And watch out for those killer lawn mowers - they're nasty!
