Q: Green Stool

I've never had this in my life but the past 2 days my stool has been dark green. There is some discomfort -- mild stomach and chest pains which i've figured was just gas but there is pain in my middle back area as well.

In spite of the timing, I have not had any green beer or anything obvious like that. Has anyone ever experienced this?

If you have diarrhea associated with the green bowel movements then it maybe an indicator of a food related bacterial infection.

I would recommend visiting your local md.

Extremely eHealthy
I get green stools if I have alot of iron rich foods or any iron pills - at times this also causes some pain in various areas, depending on a number of things.

I'd check my diet, maybe go onto a diarrhoea diet of just clear fluids (no dairy & nothing you chew etc) for 24 hours & then gradually er-introduce foods on the basis of plain & simple first, like boiled rice, boieled potato, toast & see how you go.

You should also consider whether you are taking any new medications that may be the cause (esp. Anti-biotics) & whether you've eaten anything or anywhere different & possible picked up a virus??

But, if the chest pains are really severe or start to worsen definitely get to the dr or hospital.

Green Stool
Green stools are usually a sign of rapid transit or decreased colonic transit time. Basically, stomach contents passing too quickly through your system. The green is from bile and the color is visible because it hasn't had time to be absorbed as normal.

If a change in stool color can not be attributed to a dietary reason or is accompanied by any other symptoms (such as diarrhea, constipation, weakness, or dizziness) a doctor should be consulted immediately.

With the related chest pains etc. I would ask your doctor to check you for pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or a liver/biliary dysfunction. Check your afp, albumin, sgot/sgpt, ggtp and other lab values.

Good luck!!!
