Q: Need a Brace For My Knee

I am a 40 yr old male who has had left knee surgery, total reconstruction with acl(codaver). this was on april 13 2007 I have been thru therapy and released, since then i have been fighting with social security over temp disability, and with job and family services over a medical card. understand that i only wanted the card so i could get a brace for my knee since i have no medical insurance, then i would give the card back, with no avail, my orthopaedic surgon will not release me until i have a brace(one of the most expensive on the market) (donjoy defiance). And the bvr will not help until i am released for work. I have no medical insurance to get this with, i do have a perscription for the brace but no way of getting one. I was wondering if anybody knows any other solutions to my delima? i am worried that i will injure my leg again with out one, and my doctor said if i were to go back to work with out one he would refuse treatment if i were to injure my leg with out one, can any give me insite on this matter, all information will be greatly appreciated, thanks

What kind of work do you do? ...

There may be some creative ways we can brainstorm to find you a brace.

Both very physical jobs. And the risk of injury is high, do you think?

Well, first I think that we can look into Orthopedic specialty hospitals ... they might have donation or volunteer programs that could hook you up with the Donjoy you need, or even match you with a donor who's already used such a brace and no longer needs it.

A brief search for "orthopedic hospitals" on Google gave me these results:

http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/orthonews/ a/academics.htm
http://www.orthohospital.org/giving_donate .php
http://health.usnews.com/usnews/health/bes t-hospitals/search.php?spec=ihqorth

It will take a little work, but I suggest you cruise these sites first, find some phone numbers and start calling. In order to have an "angle", you've got to create your story ... and follow up. If given or matched with a brace, what will you do in return? Provide a testimonial? Maybe be willing to look into a press release? Hospitals and universities always like press ... and you can't get something for nothing. So, you're gonna have to work for it. I can help...let me know what you think.

You could also try ebay....

I agree with YHB. There are many hospitals that have donation programs (although many are phasing these out due to "sanitary concerns" Rolling Eyes . You could contact an ortho clinic close to where you live and ask what they do with returned braces. If they discard them you could ask them to notify you when a brace like the one you require is going to be discarded. Talk to the staff in the casting department. They are usually more helpful than the "administration". Where do you live? Perhaps I could assist you with some leg work? Is it something they could bill you for? Credit card?
