I am unable to stand up unassisted for more then a couple of minutes. When I sit, I need to have my knees up to my chest to make it easier to breath. It feels like everything in my chest is sinking, like it can't hold itself up where it belongs. I also have lower back pain. I am so exhausted, I feel like I'm 100 years old. Occasionally, I will have dizzy spells while sitting, but more often when I go from sitting to standing.

I quit smoking 55 days ago. Don't know if that is related or not.

I don't even know where to begin to look for what may be wrong.

Hello Friend

I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem ...
To confirm .. you can't stand up unassisted, is this because of the lower back pain or the hardship with breathing or both?
Have you seen a doctor regarding the difficultly with breathing and dizzy spells ? The lack of Oxygen to the brain with the difficulty to breath may be causing the dizzy spells .... please see a doctor, I don't know what is causing this, however giving up smoking was a good move to help this.

Ginger

P.S

Congrats on giving up smoking ... I'm trying to at the moment, and finding it really hard ...X

It's hard to breathe when I stand without leaning against something or leaning over. The back pain I just endure. When I sit, if I can bring my knees up to my chest it just makes it easier to breathe.

My last GP told me it was just anxiety. I thought quitting would help, but it hasn't. I tried to believe it was just anxiety but it just doesn't seem right to me. This isn't something that happens all day everyday. Usually it happens for a few days a few times a year.

I just moved to a new area and do not have a GP. And I wouldn't know where to begin with these odd symptoms.

Starting all over with a new doctor just seems so daunting.

Good luck with quitting smoking. I know it's hard.......but dying is harder. I heard this frequently in the beginning from other's in the same position. It sure helped me.

Hi again

A new Doctor may help, I know it'll be weird and daunting, as you'll feel a bit anxious, however, they may have the answers you are looking for.
Wink
So you've moved to a new area, jeeeze, didn't that cause you a lot of stress ?
I'm not saying this caused you your breathing problem, but it may have contributed, along with giving up the smoking too ... you must be one hellava person, to give up and move house at the same time, and it may have just taken a bit of 'wind' out of you.
Are you feeling tired too? as you may be experiencing fatigue and anxiety ..
Try and relax a little, and do a little breathing excersise .... breath in.. hold it till the count of 3 and then out ...slowly.
Do this over, and control the breathing.
Make an appointment to see a new GP, explain to them what you are feeling, what you've done over the past few months and they'll try and help ... it may be over exertion, fatigue, anxiety and the quitting that has just taken it's toll, and the dizziness is due to not getting sufficient Oxygen whilst breathing to the brain.

I could post this into the Anxiety and stress forum, but only if you want me to .... let me know if you think this may be the problem...

I can also ask another Moderator for any suggestions, to help and support further. We're all friendly here, so no need to worry.....

Keep us posted, and take care

I guess the anxiety forum might be a good idea. I just haven't had an attack for so long that I thought I had it under control. I haven't needed medication for over 2 years. After you pointed out a few things and I did some thinking, and realized that it probably is an attack. Besides the previously mentioned triggers, there are other factors that I am sure contributed too.

What I am hoping for is information for alternatives for treating the anxiety. I don't like pills. Ativan is addictive. At least for me.

Anyway, thank you for your response and support, Ginger. I really appreciate it.

Have a wonderful day.
