Closed Femoral Osteotomy Due to Leg Length Discrepancy Posted: 08-26-07 16:53pm
My husband has a 1 inch leg length
discrepancy resulting from a congenital
defect, where the lenght of his femur and
tibia/fibula in his left leg is a total of
1 inch shorter than his right. He is 36
and is scheduled for a closed femoral
osteotomy in October to reduce the length
of his right femur by 1 inch.
Looking for anyone out there that may have
had a similar procedure due to same
condition. Have questions about
satisfaction with surgery, pain, the nail
and pins, and bone graft from the closed
bone pop-out.
He is very unsure about going through with
this -- he corrects with an outside shoe
lift, but still has major back pain.
Although the surgery may not eliminate the
pain, we are hopeful that it will reduce
it somewhat, as well as reduce the further
damage to his back due to his unstable
gait.
Thanks.

I have a friend with a similar gait
problem who opted OUT of surgery.
Instead, we work on stretching poses so
that the shorter side of her body can
lengthen while we strengthen the longer
side of her body. Is your husband open to
exercising daily?
