My mom has an extensive scar lesion due to healed tuberculosis with residual chronic cavities in the upper lobes of both lungs. She's having continuous cough on and off since many years ago. The CT scan of her chest's fine but the doctor could not find out the reason of her cough. Can anyone help here?

Usually, due to acute or chronic infections our airways can be damaged. Your mum suffered from tuberculosis and obviously her bronhi have destructed walls resulting in dilatation. The dilated bronchi are characteristic for condition known as bronhiectasis and its cardinal symptom is a chronic productive cough. Also she needs to be exam for chronic bronchitis, asthma, upper airway cough syndrome due to a variety of rhinosinus disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

We saw another doctor recently and he suggested her doing physical therapy to cough out her mucus to prevent infection. We were told that there's nothing else she can do. Does anyone has any suggests on how and what she can do to cure the coughing? Many thanks in advance.

Coughing is normal response to presence of mucus. Your mum has airflow obstruction and impaired clearance of secretions. If she cough out her mucus she'll have less chances for complications such as recurrent infections. She can use antibiotics as prevention from infections. Accumulated fluid can be eliminated with postural drainage and chest physiotherapy. Using steroids can help with reducing sputum production and decreasing airway constriction. For some cases of bronchiectasis, surgery is recommended. Your mum can also try some herbal syrups and honey to ease her cough.

All best to you and your family!

Thank you so much! The mucus that she coughs out also contain some blood which we are quite worry that it can get more serious with times. In her situation, does her cough infectious to others?

Hi!
If your mum is coughing only small amounts of blood with sputum, you should not worry. The blood is probably coming from ruptured lung small blood vessels(capillari) due to high pressure that develops while hard coughing. You should ask for prompt medical attention if she starts to cough large amounts of blood.
I'll suggest you to keep a distance while she coughs because she is very pron to infections and she can have one anytime.
