Q: About Using the Oral Pill

Hi there,

I am new here. Just a bit concerned and confused about the usage of oral contraceptive pills. Appreciate, if anyone could enlighten me.

Starting to go on the pill. Considering a cycle length of 28 days, how safe is to start the pill on the 8th day of the cycle and have intercourse only on the 15th day. I assume, it is still safe. Am i right or wrong?

Any piece of information greatly appreciated.

If you start the pill on the first day of your period, you are protected right away. But if you start it any other day of your cycle, you need to wait seven days.

So if I understand you question, then yes, you are right.

Thanks..more Details.
Hi Georgia,

thanks for that information.

I hv read that, starting the pill on any other day (other than the first) of your cycle, one need to use extra birth control for the next 7 days . i.e if the pills i started on a sunday, then condoms needs to be used until the next sunday.
Considering that fact, i started on my pill on the 8th day of my cycle (ie a wednesday). My hubby would be at home (he stays in another state for official purpose) on the 15th day of my cycle (the next wednesday). Since we are sexualy active, there are hig chances of having an intercourses. Thus my confusion if i may need to look for another protection apart from the pill since tht day falls on the next wednesday. (pill on 8th day, 9, 10, 11,12,13,14, 15th day). Do i start counting from the 9th day onwards or is it from the 8th day frm where i start counting the next 7 days.

Sorry for being so thorough. Its due to my confusion. Kindly excuse.

many thanks

It's easier than all that lol. What day of the week did you start taking the first active pill on? Let's say Monday in this example. Next Monday you will be safe. One full week from the first active pill. That's the safest way to judge, since by day 8 of their cycles most women are done with their period. Since you did not start start the active pill on the first few days of your period, you need to wait one week from the first active pill. Your cycle doesn't mean anything anymore because you've started the pill.

Thanks Again
Eiri,

Many thanks again to you. I think iam pretty clear now.

Smile So you mean i can keep my mind clear of this doubt and have intercourse minus condoms without any confusions of being pregnant.

I wouldnt want to use a barrier protection on the 15th day (since i hv already started the pill ), thus my curiosity. I couldnt get the pills frm my gyne earlier so as to start on the first day of my period Sad . Also i read somewhere that, if the pill is started on a sunday, then protection is needed until the next sunday. That again confused me SmileSmile . Anyway thanks all.

You're fine- you start on the 8th, you're good by the fifteenth. Just in time for some good fun with hubby lol.
