I am a 24 year old single mom, and I had a total hysterectomy and oophorectomy in January 2006. Yesterday after being sick for three days with nausea, vommitting and abdominal pain I went to the local emergency room. After they did several tests the doctor came back with shocking news. They had done both a urine and blood serum pregnancy test and both of them came back positive. This came as a shock not only to me, but to the doctor there as well. I was wondering if anyone new what would cause my body to think that it is pregnant even though there is no anatomical means to create a baby. The pain is still severe, as well as the nausea and vomitting, but the ER doctor stated that she did not think that i was life threatening, so she sent me home with out any kind of explanation as to why my body is thinking that it is pregnant a year and a half after a total hysterectomy. Any insight in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou very much. Shocked Question

Do you have another appointment with your regular doctor? A specialist? You should be having some kind of follow up care.

Hey,

I am 42 years old. Because of a terribly advanced case of endometriosis (so advanced that my CA-125 test results can back extremely elevated) I had to have a total hysterectomy (removal of ovaries, tubes and uterus) 8 years ago. In fact the surgery took extra long because a bladder specialist had to come in to help separate my bladder which was fused together along with other organs with endometrial scar tissue.

Today, I tested positive today for pregnancy twice with urine and once with blood. Because of those results I could not have a much needed surgery(not female related)! What's really up? Verified with the doctor and medical records post-op information that the hysterectomy was performed and that it was a total hysterectomy. Very frustrated, in pain and concerned. Any ideas?

I would follow up with another Dr. There can be other reasons for an elevated HCG, which is what you have. Pregnancy tests only test for this hormone to indicate pregnancy but there are other reasons it could be elevated. Find another Dr. if this one won't listen.

Double Hey,

After being turned down Monday for surgery because two urinalysis and a blood test showed positive for pregnancy... totally bugged and perplexed I went to my doctor's office today (Wednesday) (via urgent care) and without giving any history requested a pregnancy test. The doctor confused as to why I would want one since it is impossible for me to be pregnant (total hysterectomy 8 yrs ago)...I explained to him the story above and stated that since I know that I am not pregnant, something must be badly wrong with me. We did a pregnancy test and a complete urinalysis ... pregnancy test -negative... urinalysis ... completely normal - no protein, blood, etc.

Which means that the other doctor completely wasted my time. I could have had surgery. Now I think I am becoming quite angry. I requested my medical records from my Primary Care Physician (the negative pg test) and from the worker's compensation hospital - and I am going to take them to a nuetral doctor to compare the reports... and if need be have him give me another.

Is a tubal pregnacy possible after partial hystorectormy
I had a partial hystorectomy at 35, now at age 50 my doctor is saying that I am testing positive for pregnacy. He wants to put me in the hospital and says that it is very dangerous, I am in severe pain but have never heard of such before. He says that I cannot carry the child, but I am questioning if there is a child. He says if I had a hystorectomy, it was a botched-up one and wants to know the doctor. I have done my own research and the doctor is no longer practicing. Is this posible to have no uterus and have a tubal pregnacy?

There are a load of things this could be due to. Call your doc. and demand he do something and if no joy get a new doc. A total hyst. means you have no uterus, no ovaries, and no fallopian tubes- it is IMPOSSIBLE for you to be pregnant so something is very wrong! Could be intestinal (best bet really) or Appendicitis tho it is not common for adults, or a million other things. Positive preg tests are due to hormones and that is a strange hormone to be elevated when you have to take hormone pills. Maybe the dosage is wrong? Or the brand? I assume you're taking them because with no hormone producing organs in your body you'd grow a mustache without them. Hope that helps.

Myself I don't take hormone that has even caused my doctor to scratch him head even more. I had both ultra sounds done. Though, you Trill are right with hormone imbalance. It would be the estrogen that would be high. I don't have a mustache either LOL

POSTIVE PREGANCY AFTER TOTAL HYST 15 YEARS AGO
Hi, I was just browsing and after two years found you all. I have searched the web over and over again to try to find someone who has ever had the same thing happen to them as I have, just for piece of mind more than anything. I have been to 4 doctors and had numerous test and still show positive for pregnancy. I now get my blood checked every 6 months to make sure the level doesn't elevate to much. It started with going to the ER two years ago with profuse vomiting. They did bloodwork and my HCG level was over 15, this is definitely not normal. I told them I had a total hyst but they didn't believe me. I called my regular doc the next day. They called me right back and rushed me into the office to do a scan of my lungs and liver, and a vaginal ultrasoud and probe, they said they were looking for cancer.(totally scared me out of my wits!!) I have had every test possible and all has shown clear. Anyone who has had a total hyst needs to be checked just to be on the safe side. After a few months one doctor in Nashville Tennessee said that after you have a total hyst there are times your body will produce anti-bodies that mimick the same hormone as the one that will give a positive for pregnancy but also to keep check on those levels because there can also be a chance of tumors/cancer that will elevate your HCG levels as well. I am not trying to scare anyone I just want to spread the word for all woman to get an second, third and fourth opinion just to make sure. Write me if anyone would like to keep track of this or any new information they might receive I would be glad to hear from you.

High HCG levels-8 years after total hysterectomy
I had major back surgery in March and part of the routine blood tests were to find out if I was pregnant. I had told them that I had had a complete hysterectomy back in Dec 2000.-my test came back positive so they reran the test and it was still psoitive. I took the results to my PCP and she had me retake the tests and those tests came back positive as well. I have to go back to see her at the end of next week. She seemed to be concerned with the results. I am trying to do some research on the net to see what this could possibly mean but am not having much luck as to what this could mean. If anyone has any thoughts or websites that I could look at that would be great. Thanks! Kim

I am a 42 years old and had a complete hysterectomy 14 yrs ago.
last month i went to the er because my chest was hurting and i felt like i had the flu, for some reason the triage nurse did not ask me when my last menstral was so the doc ordered a pregnancy test. It turned out that i have pluracy and asthma but then i got the shock of my life, he said i was pregnant. When i told him about my hysterectomy he re did the test 3 times each coming back with the same result.. pregnant.
I am uninsured and unemployed and i am scared if any one can help please write back

I went to the doctor today and he told me that he thinks I might have a Sacral tumor. He said that my elevated HCG levels are a tumor marker. I am having an abdominal/pelvic CT scan with contrast on Wednesday and am having blood work done tomorrow. This was a shock to me as I wasn't expecting this. I won't have all of my answers until the 21st. He told me that this is something that can't be overlooked (this is my neurosurgeon doing all of this as my regular primary doctor wasn't doing anything). Needless to say I am very worried and scared.. over the past year I have had 6-8 pregnancy tests and they have all come back positive and all my primary doctor would say is that maybe that is the way my body was.

I am surprised your primary doctor didn't send you to a OB-GYN earlier...At least you are now in the right hands and something is being accomplished...Keep us advised on what they say...I wish you well and try not to worry....You will be fine...
