Q: Stiff Neck And Shoulder Pain For a Year

Hello,
Can anyone help? I got shingles on the left side of my back last August which has thankfully gone. A few weeks later I also got swollen glands and a temperature for a while and then last September my neck got so stiff I was unable to move it. It was painful to walk, look up even a little to hang the washing out or anything. I also had weird pains in my head and one night i couldn't even lie down for the excrutiating pain so phoned the duty doctor and he told me to call an ambulance. They gave me diazepan at the hospital which helped a lot but then the pain came back so i was given exercises until the money ran out. I can turn my head a bit and have changed the strong painkillers for normal ones i take every day. The Doctor says i have cervical dystonia which will get better and sent me away. I felt i was wasting his time. i've now been unwell for one year and still have a stiff neck and it also feels like a trapped nerve in my left shoulder. I'm a bit scared of my doctor because he seemed cross with me. I try to move my head every day. What is wrong with me? How did i get this weird thing? ANY comments from anyone would be really welcome. When i can move my head normally again i'll be a happy girl. Smile

Hey
did you have an accident of any kind? you should find a good atlas orthoganist. that would get your cervical vertibrae back where it should be.

Hi Eloise,
I had both the stiff neck and shoulder pain for several years but it was very obvious that they resulted from my TMJ. I initially had pain directly in the jaw joint and couldn't open my mouth. It wasn't until about 7 years later or so that my neck started hurting and then followed by my left shoulder. It too felt (and sometimes still does) that I have a pinched nerve. Do you have any other symptoms of TMJ such as headaches, earaches, popping noise while eating, etc.? I know almost nothing about shingles, but have read that people with TMJ have been known to develop shingles sometime in their life. I can't remember why tho.

Since you live in the UK, I know that the medical field is different than here in the USA. Are there people who practice cranial sacral massage therapy or something similar? I discovered a CS-MT two years ago and she finally broke up the constant shoulder pain I had been experiencing for years. I would suggest trying one even if you have to pay for it out of your own pocket (I did).

I wish I could help more. Dyan - what is an orthoganist? Is that similar to a chiropractor?

Take care of yourself Eloise.
God bless...
Carol

I Have An Idea Too
You can try a chiropracter. I have a very bad neck, and they can help alot. look for what they call a hands on chiro, which means he uses his hands mostly. All of them vary, look for a good one with experience. that should help you. A good chiropracter will be able to hold your head and tell it ..by feel. That is how you know you have found a good one.i know alot of folks dont believe it it, but i go all the time. I have seen them fix alot of necks, shoulders and knees.migraines, you name it. Its also cheaper because if they send you for xrays, its usually just regualr xrays, not an mri which is the fad test of this decade. i guess. cindy

Hey
an atlas orthoganist is a chiropractor that specializes in upper neck alignment. (mainly c1) It has done wonders for me. It is a good idea for any one with tmd to look into a good chiropractor as things are all attached and Let me tell you I felt so much better after starting chiropractic treatment.

However I emphasize the word GOOD. one who doesnt have knowlege of tmd or is a lousy chiro can do more harm than good.
