Q: Rain Rain Go Away

Yikes! I don't remember hearing of any floods around me in all my almost 26 years of life. But yesterday I got a call from my mother telling me her and my dad are going up north ('bout 2 1/2 hours away from us) with my grandma (it's her land/house) and my aunt and uncle to check out the flood damage Shocked
My other aunt lives up there, and she has horses & cattle in a couple different pastures. Well one pasture is across the street, and those horse and cattle were swimming! Crying or Very sad
They knew that before they got up there, but once they came to the drive to where my grandma's house is, it was completely washed out. It's a gravel driveway type thing about 1/2 mile long. There is a very small creek that flows under this road through a big pipe (?) thingie that runs off the spring up by the house......that little trickle turned into a 6 foot ditch. My aunt and my uncle had to go clear up on the hillside and walk all the way to the house, where water was gushing out of the spring and when they got in the house, there was water about 2 feet deep (so far) in the basement. They live on the border of Soldiers Grove and Clayton. In Readstown (also a neighboring town) where my grandpa is burried, the cemetery is under water, and all that can be seen of his grave stone is the very top. The town of Gays Mills (neighboring town) was evacuated and I guess some guys house up rooted and floated away. The nursing home in the Grove was also evacuated. There are 3 very big rivers around there, the Wisconsin river, the Mississippi and the Kickapoo. Rain is supposed to keep up all week. I don't know what will be happening for this weekend, as Saturday is the wake for my great aunt, but the building this was going to be at is flooded, and the church is in a different town BUT all the roads leading there are closed. They sent out the national guard, I hope things get cleared up soon. My mom took some pictures while she was there. I haven't yet seen them, they got back late last night. Just a bit of a newsflash from WI.

It's raining here now. Living 45 minutes from the coast is not really a good thing. Yay Gulf of Mexico?

no i dont live near the coast thank goodness! but i have lots of friends who do and im scared that it will be a bad storm

the thing we are most worried about here in lakeway is that i live literally 2 seconds form the lake and its already well over full. lakeway has alot of hills and lakefront homes and stuff and the flooding gets so bad here they have to shut down eevrything includeing the streets
they also have to evacutate homes alot
last flood (about 3 weeks ago0 we were almsot evacutaed because of the flooding

I am so sorry to hear about what your family is going through, I know where abouts you are talking about. I hope things get better for you and your family! We had some rain yesterday but we needed it!
I used to live in Galveston, TX and everytime they used to talk about hurricanes everyone would head out of town, I worked at the hospital there and would just go put in some extra time because I would not leave town, you only had one main road heading out of town and there were always accidents, I was always safer going to work at the hospital.
Thanks for the info, like I said, I do hope that things get better for you and your family and you see the sun soon. I understand how awful flooding can be! Oh, I think about those poor animals too! We had some flooding here too a few years ago and I went and helped some people get to higher ground.
I only stayed in Florida a short time, I never wanted to live there, just visit.
I know, you just never know sometimes, I think it can happen almost anywhere!

Thanks for your concern Sandy.
As of yesterday afternoon the water level was down slightly from what it had been....but they are still expecting more rain. As for my grandma's basement, all the important stuff (Furnace, and such) is up off the ground since they do get the occasional bit of water down there. They live right down in a valley...only this time the water was higher and the water got to I think the furnace, so that's all my grandma is worried about. Otherwise she doesn't keep much in the basement, maybe some junk. But as far as the house goes, that's in pretty good shape. They did get a sump pump going for the basement tho. Her road/driveway is another story. I'll add some pics.

As for my aunts house, she was able to get all the horses and cattle across the highway into a higher pasture on the hillside....so all of those ones are fine, they just have to make friends with the other horses since they're in a pasture together (It's about 75 acres, so they're not exactly crowded)

For my great aunts wake, it's still a go. They may just have to move where the lunch will be served....but that's no biggie. We have family coming from both coasts, so it's hard to cancel.

This is a building and park next to the Kickapoo river

Along side the road on the way to my Aunts house. Notice where the tops of the trees are, and you can see the water is moving pretty good if you look at the telephone pole

This is what's left of the road to my Grandma's house, this is about where the road begins, and goes back about 1/2 mile past where the people are standing.

Close up of all the layers it went through.

This is the house, if you look at the bottom of the picture you can see where the water literally cut through the yard. There was a small ditch to start with....but it got bigger.

You can see again where the water cut through, and then just the bit of water left on the lawn. That field is/was a tobacco field.

It's flooding here too. If you know anything about Pittsburgh then you know about the three rivers. It floods here every year it seems like. I was lucky growing up, we lived far enough away from the rivers to not flood very much plus it's really hilly here. Right now I live right next to the river and my basement is a little flooded. That really sucks because we live in an old house built for the mill workers which means my bathroom is down there. I went down this morning and saw the water and had to come back up and put on boots. Not cool. It's stopped raining here (for now) so it should drain pretty fast. Millvale on the other hand just got hit a couple of weeks ago with a flood that made national news and now they're flooding again. I feel sorry for those people.
