Well there are certainly an abundance of SUCFE sufferers.
Just found the forum as i was looking for some ortho info myself and came accross this post.
Firstly, i had a left Slipped epihysis when i was 16. It was pinned with 3 moores titanium nails which where removed 1 year later when my growth plate had fused. SUCFE can happen to individuals at an early age pre 10, or late in your teens, up to the ages of 17. Its thought to happen when a big growth spurt develops in the child, its more common in the left leg, and in about 40% of patients the right becomes effected too. My young cousin developed SUCFE at age 8 in left hip, then age 13 in right hip. He never got any pins removed as they where to heavily embedded in the bone.
The issues that can arise from pins left insitu develop when future hip surgery is required, which believe me, in 90% of patients with SUCFE they will NEED as almost everyone with this condition goes on to develop osteoarthritis. They are fairly advanced now in different techniques for total hip replacement and hip resurfacing. This is where pins being left insitu could cause the probs. Firstly it would probably rule anyone out with pins insitu of having a hip resurfacing due to the nature of a resurfacing and where the bone is cut, and for a total hip replacement the surgery can be done with pins left insitu, however it could determine what type of hip replacement you will have. This would obviously need to be discussed with your ortho surgeon.

Anyway onto me. I had the op at 16. I had quite a bad slip, undiagnosed for several months as a lot of them are. However, after my pins where removed a year later, i went on to a boxing career for over 6 years, regular running on the road, could basically do pretty much anything. However there always was a weakness there, was always pulling muscles, nothing that never healed, but it was not all plain sailing. However it never held me back, thats what i am trying to say, well not until 34 years of age, started exercising again, and thats when all my pain started.
So put up with it for two years, and in June last year had a uncemented metal on metal hip replacement. Surgery and recovery went fine, bit of blood loss post op, but nothing to write home about.

So a year on and for the last 3 months, everything was going great guns, then 3 weeks ago i get this pain for no apparant reason, worse when sitting down and driving, and usually relieved by walking. Also had pain at bottom of wound when pressing in. So seen ortho reg, they stated it maybe a muscle herniation, which i thought was rubbish, i personally think its a suture that is trying to work its way to the surface. Anyway, had an ultrasound today of my hip, and there is no hernation of the muscle, everything looks fine. They did however say, that if it was a suture, it may be difficult to see under ultrasound.
So basically i am back at square one. Go to the surgeon again in two weeks for follow up. I really have no clue to what this is now, will need to wait and see. Oh i am also an ex orthopaedic nurse?

Legg Calve Perthes and 2 slipped hips
My son was diagnosed with LCP when he was 5 and was misdiagnosed for over a year.He was then pinned in R hip, but doc left it in for 5 years.I took him to another surgeon who immediatly took them out..On check-up from that doc noticed the L hip was slipped, back in for pinning...1 year later took those out, 1 year later slipped R hip, put pins in that hip..On check up from that surgery, screws were too big(1 was almost in groin), back in for smaller screws...6 mo. later screws back out....1 year ago, some experiamental surgery( dislocate, shave down, pin it together, manually rotate leg) couldn't rotate leg, he was already under for 6 hours, and he still has screws in L hip, but 1 is starting to back out..Now he has calf pain, shooting pain from the incision down his leg, and weight bearing pain, and doc is taking his time...Any thoughts????

Symptoms of SCFE
I've read much about SCFE and I'm convinced this is what my 16 year old daughter has but we are waiting diagnosis. Started off with pain in one hip during exercise and that worsened, it's now 2 hips, thighs and knees. Her legs sometimes can't support her weight if she's done too much. Even walking now makes her stiff and hurts. She's had X-Rays that showed nothing abnormal, she's waiting on blood test results and we have an appointment with a specialist on 5 August and can't wait for that to come as it's just getting worse and worse. She's upset because nothing has been diagnosed. Fingers crossed the specialist will help. Are these symptoms familiar with anyone who's had SCFE? Thanks for any replies.

Hi, I was 14 when I had a right one done, I was very active, doing a milk run on foot and playing rugby, etc it started off with a groing pain and numbing pain down my right leg, but i just brushed it off until I landed very heavily on my right hip in gym one day and it popped out (so to speak), so it can affect anybody no matter their physical shape or energy, I spent 2 months in hospital waiting for the surgery & the 3 pins that would go in to correct. My aim was to have a cycling career which I did reach with a positive attitude, I know I was probably one of the fortunate ones (the following year is another story) I had my pins out at 18 which was very successful except I forgot to request them for a momento, now all I have to show is the operation scar, and if you are wondering it happended 31yrs ago. I can empathise with those that have more of a hard time than I did, but with family support etc things can be made easier than you think

Hi, I had SUFE at age 11, misdiagnosed for 12 months then told I should have been in surgery within 15mins of presenting at A and E the first time around. I was under a consultant most of my teens, but the hip was that damaged with 2 inch shortness and almost zero internal rotation I was told to wait.....I am now 29 and have been fighting for surgery since I was 17. I am told bone stock of my femur will decrease chances of hip replacement actually lasting and chance of a revision is almost zero. So I can understand why they want me to wait, but that doesn't help me right now!! I thought quality of life overrides??? I am posting and searching this morning due to my hip constantly locking so I cannot straighten up and I am finding it difficult finding any information on this. It locks without warning and the longest I have been stuck bent over is 8 days.
I am wondering if it is because I was not operated on in the first place as to why my hip is so bad now. It is interesting to find this post!!!
