i am 29 years old and had pins placed in both of my hips at age 13 due to a slipped capital femoral epiphysis. I am a very active guy who enjoys working out and doing all kinds of strenuous activites. However, as a result of the slipped epiphysis' I am lacking in alot of mobility. I experience intermittent pain due to my hips but overall the pain is not that bad. The thing that bothers me the most is my lack of mobility, most specifically my lack of internal rotation in both hips. I have often times entertained the thought of having my hip replaed and/or of having a reconstructive osteotomy on my right hip to improve it's function. I know that I am very young to consider having a hip replaced, but with the new technology and materials that they have available now, hip replacements are lasting longer than ever. Has anyone in here ever had a slipped capital femoral epiphysis? If so, have you ever had corrective surgery or a hip replacement as a result of it? I know that the hip replacement surgery is actually a smaller operation and the recovery time is faster than with a osteotomy. My last ortho specialist told me that my hip wasn't bad enough yet to have a osteotomy and if even it were, he wouldn't necessarily recommend an osteotomy....Anybody have any experiences with this procedure for their hip? All I know is that I want to be able to move like the young guy that I am....Often times I feel like a 29 year old who has a pair of 65 year old hips........Any responses would be greatly appreciated.......Thank you....

Jason

hi, I was 9 years old when I went through the slipped capital femoral epiphysis. By the time I was ten, I had 6 operations. I had a tripple osteotomy I believe. I know they had planned a procedure and once they got in it was much worse than the x-rays showed. Ive been told since 10 to either have a replacement or fusion. I am now 19 years old and wake up every morning stiff as a bored due to this and I am doing some research trying to find anything to help me get my hip back. I don't know if this helps you, but atleast lets you know theres someone else out there.

Scfe
My son in 11 years old and has been diagnosed with scfe. He had 3 pins placed into his right hip in aug 06. He is now having severe pain in his right hip and pain in his left thigh and knee. We go to the Dr. Next week. He is very athletic and very good...Like most 11 year old boys his dream is to play college football..And possibly nfl Smile is this realistically out of the question? College ball that is. Our Dr. Has stated that he should totally recover...But now that I have found this forum I am truly worried!! Someone please advise.

Slipped Epiphysis
I,m shocked to see how many people have had this problem. What is really interesting is that so many seem to have this problem at around the same time in their lives. I'm 60 yrs. old and when I was 13 I had to have a pin ( actually a screw) in my right hip, it was slipped as well as broken. I never had any rehab in those days and was never allowed to play gym again.I was on crutches for 9 months. It has never given me too much trouble except for mobility. When I was 15 I had the screw removed. Now I have degeneration in the hip and have to have a replacement in the near future. I do have to say that a few years ago I had some buldging disc's in my back and my orthopedic dr. suggested to do certain exercises and go to the chiapractor to help my mobility in my hip, and it did improve. I only ever knew one other person who had a slipped epiphysis and he was also 13 when it happened. Hope this message proves helpful or at least interesting to someone. Very Happy

Life After Scfe
My 7 year old son was diagnosed with SCFE in early July last year, drs were no sure of the correct treatment for a child his age. In late Aug he had a surgical hip dislocation and pinning of both hips, 6 weeks in a spica cast followed by 6 weeks in a wheelchair. He is currently getting around well, has limited mobility in his hips and is not to run or jump. We are very fortunate that he has no pain, walks with a slight limp, leg length difference of about 1 inch.
The dr is suggesting that he have an osteotomy done on both sides as he feels it will improve his mobility. I am not sure if we should go through with this treatment at this time or if we can postpone?!?!?!? The recovery will be similar to his last recovery and quite honestly the thought is daunting.
I would appreciate any thoughts.

Scfe
My daughter is 13 and she was diagnosed with scfe a little over a year ago. She was misdiagnosed at first and her left hip was slipped out of the socket. She has both hips pinned, her right hip is doing fine, her left hip has limited mobility. Her ortho suggested removing the pin from her right hip because of discomfort and southwick osteotomy for her left. The osteotomy should give her better mobility(maybe she can ride a bike again). She has been on and off crutches for the past year. If anybody has more info on this procedure please help!!!!

I'm sorry your daughter has been having such a tough time with her hips. It's definately no fun to have this conditon. I was the same age as your daughter when I had my hips pinned. My best advice would be to get at least two or three other opinions from specialists who specialize in reconstructive hip surgery. Orthopedic surgeons are not all the same, and some of those guys don't know much about, or have much knowledge of, the various reconstructive surgeries that can be done on a hip that has slipped. I may end up having an osteotomy done on my right hip. I've had conflicting opinions from various doctors as to having the operation done; some say it would probably help, others say it might make things worse....It's not an easy thing. I'm 32 years old now, and I'm tired of putting up with the pain, the awkwardness, and the lack of mobility......FYI, there is a doctor that is based out of St. Louis, MO I believe by the name of John Clohisy...This guy specializes in reconstructive hip surgery - all types of osteotomies - and there are a few articles online that he has written or had written about him. I think he practices at Barnes/Jewish Hospital or something like that.......But you need to find a guy like that.....It might be helpful to just look the guy up online and read some of his info.......

I Also Am Experiencing Hip Pain After 36 Years....
i too had a slipped epiphisis at age 15....i had a pin inserted and the pin was removed a year after surgery....i am 48 years old now...until about 6 months ago i was pain free in the hip and only had slight discomfort in my left knee occasionally...

6 months ago i started getting hip pain and lower back pain after playing golf or mowing the lawn...it is very depressing as i think i am starting to get osteoarthritis...not 100% sure yet and have not been xrayed but i am fairly certain it is not muscle related...

any tips will help..

I Can't Believe I Found This Forum
HI, I am 31 years old female and when I was 12 I had SCFE. They had a hard time diagnosing it to begin with. The doctors didn't know what was wrong with me. I had hip and lower back pain on my right side. I also developed a limp. After about 3-4 months my parents took me to our family Chiropractor. He is the one who discovered something was wrong with my Leg. It flopped to the side and he knew something was wrong. I was then reffered to an Orthopedic surgeon. I was immediatly scheduled for surgery. Long story short, 3 surgeries later and 8 months on crutches it was over. The ended up putting 4 pins in my hip in which they had to redo once and then ended up taking them out after 8 months.

Till this day I deal with hip pain, back pain, limited range of motion.
My biggest concern is that I am due to have a baby anytime now. I am scared that my limited range of motion is going to interfere with the process. My OBGYN doesn't know much about the condition nor cares too much about it. I am wondering if anyone out there has given birth with this condition? OR know anyone who has. IF I knew for sure it would be a problem I would schedule a c-section. I just don't want to jump to that conclusion if not needed.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from someone.

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis And Hip Replacement
I had pins put in both hips for the same reason when I was in middle school. Due to increasing problems and pain in my right hip - I had a total hip replacement 11 weeks ago (and will eventually have to have the left hip replaced too - but hopefully not for a few years). I am only 34. I am still not 100% yet, so I cannot tell you yet all the pros and cons of completing this surgery - but I believe that it will give me more flexibility and movement without pain. There is of course the concern that the total hip replacement will not last my lifetime - but with the newer technologies (mine is ceramic) this was a chance I had to take.
Find a good doctor (possibly one who focuses on kids - not the elderly). I am in Phx - so if you are in this area or willing to travel for surgery - I would recommend my doctor.
Kristi

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis
hello,

Im 25, I have Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis at age 13. Go see another Dr. with Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis it doesnt matter about ages just as long as you have reached adulthoos and have finished growing. GO see another specialist. I am not able to be as mobile as i like to be due to the stiffness, pain etc. Dont let a Dr. tell you to wait if you are in pain, and unable to be mobile. you can write me.

slipped epiphysis
I'm a 51 year old male who had a left slipped epiphysis repaired surgically by the placement of 4 pins when I was 15 years old. One year later the pins were all removed. I have, from the time of the pin removal surgery, had some limit of motion in my hip as well as ocassional pain. The pain usually occurs after very physical exertion such as moving heaving objects (moving a refrigerator). I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with osteoporosis. I have never known, or communicated with ANYONE who had a slipped epiphysis. I was told, at the time that my problem was most likely caused by a combination of motorcross motorcycle riding which put pressure on the hip, rapid growth of about 6 inches in one year, and being about 30 pounds overweight. the biggest evidence of my surgery is a very nasty scar, about 8 inches in lenght on my outer left hip. If any wants to ask questions in regard to aging after this surgery, don't hesitate to ask. My surgery was done in Florence, South Carolina in December of 1973.

Slipped epiphysis
Hi, I was diagnosed with slipped epiphysis in my left hip when I was 9 and the right hip when I was 10. They placed 4 pins in each hip. I have dealt with limited mobility and pain since I was 9. As years passed the mobility in my left leg decreased and the pain increased. I had a severe limp. I was diagnosed with arthritis in both hips. I am now 36 years old. 12 weeks ago I had a left total hip replacement. Surgery went ok, but they had some difficulty getting those pins out.It is still too soon to tell, but I feel that my hip is stronger, I can walk on a treadmill and ride a stationary bike (I could'nt pedal without pain before). My right hip will have to be done eventually but for right now it is ok. I am walking without a cane but still limp ( not as bad as before surgery). PT feels that my muscles were very weak to begin with so it will take time to strengthen.

After watching my husband go through hip replacement on his hip, I think you are doing just wonderful...Just be careful to not overdo it...Build those muscles back up slowly...Be sure and wait until you are good and strong before you attempt the right hip....I am so happy for you...Keep up the good work....

Good luck,
Caroline
