We burp, belch and fart an average of 12 times a day. But why do we have gas? And what is intestinal gas?...the basics here....
Intestinal gas forms from two main sources - swallowed air and bacteria in the intestine. Plus, learn which factors to avoid to decrease the likelihood of gas....
How much gas is normal? Usually symptoms of gas and flatulence are more bothersome than serious. But learn when you should seek help for excessive gas here....

My grandaughter is 18 days old. She weighed 4lbs 7 oz and is a little over 5 lbs now. My daughter is have a couple problems that we cant seem to find answers for. I am hoping someone out there can help us.
Using the #1 nipple it takes baby and hour to drink 2 oz. Using a #2 nipple she takes it faster. However no matter which one, she wont burp. What determines which nipple size you should use? She has also tried various styles. Secondly baby hates laying on her back. She seems to love being held up against your chest. She also seems to cramp up brings up her knees turns red screams and passes gas. My daughter has bought the drops for gas and we are on day 2 of them but it seems worse. Does anyone have any ideas??? Thanks so much!

That is a tiny baby! Make sure she is thriving by taking her to the doctor for her checkups and weighing her at home if you can.

If it takes her an hour to drink 2 oz. maybe she isn't hungry. Switching to the number 2 is just going to make her not having to try so hard, make her eat more than she needs to get in one suck, and can actually increase her chances of getting a lot of air in her tummy. Or, Are you mixing the formula according to the package directions? She might not necessarily need to burp very time she eats. She might need a different formula if she is very gassy, colicky. There are special formulas that reduce colic, or you can get soy or lactose free.

If the gas drops aren't working, you can also try Gripe water, which I have found works very well.

Talk to your pediatrician about your formula and ask him which one would be the best to try.
