Help! Ongoing Period After Depo Provera Shot
Posted: 03-18-04 07:25am

Since the birth of my last child 2 years ago I maybe had my period 2 or 3 times. After going to the doctor and him saying it was normal sometimes after having a child, I decided to get the depo so that I could not get pregnant and also so I won't have to run to the pharmacy store to get a pregnancy test each week.

I got on the shot in january 2004 and now am due for another one. Since january I have had my period none stop. I am so tired of it too. I called my doctor and he said it's normal but to come in to see if I am low in iron which I did and I am not.

Also, I have been feeling so moody and depressed and I don't have the desire to have sex. I have no sex drive what so ever!!!! Crying
or Very sad

is this normal? If you know about this or had this experience before please let me know. I don't want to get pregnant but I also don't want to go back in to get the shot again if this is how it's gonna be!

Thank-you

I have been the same way, except I haven't had the depression and lack of sex drive (although having your period for 3 months may be the reason). As for having your period for that long my understanding is it is normal. It sounds like we started at the same time. My second shot is due next week. My doctor told me that there could be unusual bleeding for up to the first 6 months. You may want to try one more shot and see how it pans out. That's what I am going to do anyway.

Most people who are going to respond well to the shot do so after the first shot. If you have bled nonstop I would definately not get another one!! My friend kept trying and ended up bleeding for nine months straight. Then she finally smartened up and went on the pill. And she hasn't had a problem since.
If you do not want to remember taking a pill everyday, there is always the patch. I personally hate the patch, but a lot of people like it.
The choice is ultimately yours, but I definately do not recommend getting another depo shot. It isn't worth the hassle.

Sad yeah I got on depo in febuary and the doctor never even warned me there was a chance I could bleed she just said that I wouldnt have a period and thats natural. Ive been on my period now for 20 days and its a pain in my butt. The gave me some pills cause I was going so heavy I couldnt move. If your going heavy maybe u can see bout getting on them pills? Premarin is what they are called. They havnt stopped my period but the doctor said they are supposed to. For 2 weeks being on this to stop my period because of depo it slowed my period down almost stopping it where as so I can regain a little bit of my life.

I cannot believe that these doctors aren't giving you girls all of the information. It makes me soooo mad! Even at family planning, you have to watch a video on depo with all of the possible side effects before making your decision. Only a few women do not get their periods. The rest bleed constantly and gain all kinds of weight. I would be so mad at my doctor if they did not tell me that!

I didnt have to watch any tape on depo-provera when I went to family planning they didnt show any thing. I had to go to er last night because my bleeding was so heavy im 20 years old and decided to get on birth control because my boy friend and I waited 5 months before we had sex. We made the decision because im 20 and hes 21 we know were not finaciallystable to have a child hes in college and im out of work. Now here I am I cant get a job because I barely move and I almost bleed to death. I did get mad at the doctor. Now the doctor in er wants me to go see another gyn. So that he can play with hormones to make my period stop. Im starting to hate doctors. Seems like no one knows what they are talking about.

I cannot believe they did not show you the video. Hey, maybe they only make you watch that if you are under 18. I cannot remember how old I was when I was considering depo. I am sorry you are so miserable. Good luck with the hormones!

Rolling Eyes no wonder you feel depressed and off sex while having a constant period!!! You need to stop having the depo and do something else. You should not have to suffer like this. Take control of the situation and tell the doctor what you want.

It must be the under 18 thing.. I didn't have to watch a video either. Thankfully I have been doing ok with it so far. I bled for 2 months straight, but it has finally come to a stop. I get my update shot this friday so we will see how the next 3 months go. For me I had worse side effects with the pill so I can't imagine the shot can be worse.

I actually had the same problem with depo. I've been on it twice. The first time I was on it for maybe a year. I didn't have a period the whole year, but I did gain weight and had problems getting lubricated. I went off of it because I was at a point where I didn't want to have sex with anyone, so why bother with getting stuck every 3 months.

Then this last time I went on it was horrible. I bled off and on for the whole 3 months. My gyno gave me premarin on maybe 3 seperate occassions. It usually stopped my period after two days, but then a week later it would start right back up.

Finally, near the end of the 3 month period, she put me on bc pills. I believe it was orthro-novum. It made my period only come once a month, but it came for 7 days straight and on those 7 days I bled so much I thought I was dying. I even ended up going to the er. They switched the pills and the same thing kept happening. All the docs would say is the depo is still in my system and once it's gone, things will be back to normal.

Well, they're not. Now, I went on this last depo shot sometime in january 2003, I believe and my hormones are still messed up. I only get my period once a month now, but it's way heavier than it was before I went on the depo. And now it's seeming like i'm allergic to birth control or something. Will never take depo again, the pills make my periods really heavy, so what? Right now, all I use are condoms. At least with those I don't have to worry about month-long periods.

I completely understand what you're going through. I decided to go off of the pill to try depo at the very beginning of last november. I have had my period since then. That's 5 months of having a period, every single day. Which is not only annoying, but it can also get expensive. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and i'm going to ask him if I can go back on the pill asap. I'm due for my shot again in two weeks and i've heard that taking the pill can stop the bleeding. Here's hoping... I'll keep you posted.

Hmmm...Ms_chatz, you said that the pill that they put you on made you bleed really heavy for 7 days? That sounds like what happened to me...The doctor put me on ortho-tricyclen, and I bled really heavy for 12 days! When I asked her if it was normal, she told me "no", and that the pills had too much estrogen for me. I'm now on a pill called "triquilar 21", and it has less estrogen...I don't know, you may want to ask your doc about too much estrogen in your pills, or something like that...

Bloodredsky, I just gave up on the pills. Me and my doc went through all of that (too much estrogen, etc). I had to switch pills about 4 times, all with the same result. So i've just given in to the fact that my body doesn't do too well with bc pills. Oh well.

I was on a certain pill for seven years. Then my body just started to reject it. But, I went through six different kinds of pills until I found the right one. There is most likely one out there for you. They all have different hormonal levels and even a slight change could work for you. I understand your frustration and why you gave up, but if you ever do decide to try again just talk to your doctor a lot before actually starting a pill. Doctors actually have a book that lists all of the pills and side effects. It also says which pill to switch to, if this certain pill gives you certain side effects. I hope that made sense! Still Got the Damn Period
Posted: 05-01-04 09:18am

Til this day I still have this period! I went to my doector last month and he gave me pills to stop in which they did nothing at all. They again checked to see if I was low in iron from bleeding so much and it came out normal. I have however gotten the first signs of tss (from wearing tampons so much) and I went in to see him again cause I cannot take it. He told me about these small cups you put inside you called instead. Instead of using tampons or pads. You can buy them anywhere. I bought mine at a walmart. They are actually very helpful. You use them for up to 12 hours. I don't want to get on nothing else (birth control) for now cause I am trying to see if my body gets back to normal soon. Rolling Eyes

I tried instead about a year ago. I didn't like it too much. It was really messy taking it out, and at times there was leakage. But it sounds like it's working well for you. That's a good way to avoid tss. I was afraid of the same thing, so during my long period, i'd sometimes just use tampons during the day and switch to pads for the night. Ugh! I'm so glad that's over. I hate pads!

I didn't watch a video either but I was extremely well-informed already, and the nurse told me of most of the side effects anyway. She asked if I new and I said yes so that's why she didn't tell me.

The only issue I'm having is that it's making my acne worse Sad on a 23 year old woman, that's not cool. I've struggled with acne since puberty.
