Q: Tmj Treatments - Any Success?

Hi, I am at a crossroads with my tmj treatment & I would love to know if anyone has tried the following treatments with any success? A bit of background first.. I have just had my nasal passages widened in day surgery in an attempt to be able to breathe through my nose instead of my mouth, but unfortunately, a month later I still can't seem to keep my mouth closed consistently & I'm still in pain. The maxillo facial surgeon has now suggested hypnotism to suggest to my sub conscious mind to keep my mouth shut!! Has anyone tried this & did it work? My second option is to see a neuro muscular dentist who specializes in TMJ who tests & tries to correct your bite. I had braces when I was young & I thought that they would have improved my bite!?! Does anyone have any feedback on this form of treatment? Meanwhile, does anyone know of any EFFECTIVE pain killers that you can use long term & won't harm you? (unlike ibuprofen) Thanks for your help, it is nice to know that I am not alone in trying to find a solution. Highwaycc

I've had tremendous success with medical cannabis
For me TMJ is very much stress-associated. Medical cannabis has helped me 'break the cycle'. Two weeks into treatment I am almost symptom-free. If you are lucky enough to live in a compassionate use state, I suggest talking to your doctor

It was for me!
Safer than NSAIDs which wreaked havoc on my GI tract and did god knows what to my liver!
Not really sure what your safety concerns are. If ingested or vaporized, cannabis medication is extremely safe. The correlation to schizophrenia is controversial and overblown.
Says Dr. Robert Pertwee of Auburn University: "There is very little evidence that cannabis is harmful in the long term."

I suggest that persons interested in cannabis treatment do the research for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Don't rely on my testimonial OR the glib dismissal of some internet chat board moderator. Find a practitioner that focuses on medical cannabis and discuss you health problems and concerns. You should be able to come to an informed conclusion as to whether or not the clinical benefit justifies the risk in your own life. If you are a child or posses child-like immaturity, then cannabis is probably not for you.
Here is one of many interesting studies:

Drug-Free treatments
For my TMJ -which is basically 98% back to perfect until my wisdom teeth got pulled yesterday- I used plastic mouth pieces. I wore a bottom piece which just fit over my teeth and was built up in the back to help re-align my jaw... I wore it in the day time ONLY. At night, I wore a mouth piece that fit over my teeth and was built up in the middle to prevent me from clenching and grinding. I wore the bottom one for a year or so then I got weaned off of it. Today, I still wear my night time piece and my jaw has felt terrific. I still have a bit of limited mouth opening and I have an open bite, but I'm use to them and they don't really bother me at all unless I'm trying to rip a piece of lettece.... but compared to the pain i had before, this is nothing at all.

Kaylie, good to hear that splint therapy was helpful to you. It certainly was for me. During the day I wear a splint similar to what you described, and at night I wear a splint called a Bionator, which keeps my top and bottom jaws in alignment, and also prevents me from grinding my molars. Now I have no pain or clicking in my TMJs. I wish I had started the splint therapy decades ago!

To anyone out there who has not tried splint therapy, or has it has not found at TMD therapist who knows how to use the right kind of splint, certainly give it a try. I actually had to try over half a dozen different kinds of splints, before finding the right combination. I've heard the same from a lot of other people suffering from TMD.

There's a TMJ specialist in Orange County, California who specializes in TMJ treatment. He mainly focuses on non-surgical therapies, which in this case, is a very good option. You can email him to see what services he may offer you. One great thing about this services was that he cured his own TMJ. He had TMJ for many years and he cures TMJ dysfunction in a two step process.

kaylie535, your situation sounds really similar to mine. I purchased a hard acrylics went off the Internet, and had my dentist custom fit into my teeth, and I wear it at night and when not eating during the day. I feel so much better now. The downside is that it took many years to figure out the right combination of splinting. The first few they made for me actually made the pain worse.

To answer the questions of the original poster, hypnosis is probably the only therapy I did not try, because so many people told me that it didn't do them any good, or only lasted for a short time. The main thing is to get your jaws position comfortably, and for people like me with dental problems, splinting was the answer. Search online for acrylic splints, and see what's available. Just about any can be customized for you.
