Every Day Struggle With Sexism (Page 1)

User Profile
Yes, it is a double entendre.

Anyways I was thinking that women have to struggle daily with sexism in our jobs, in our communities, and sometimes in our relationships. What do you find frustrating when it comes to sexism? What are some of the hurdles you have had to overcome?

I am lucky, I think in that i have aman who is very sensitive, sometimes even more than me. It is like living with a woman. But there are times that even i get irritated. One example is that he never ever starts dinner, no matter how late I am getting home from work. He always gets home at least an hour before i do, but nothing has been started. Not even to put away the clean breakfast dishes. I think some things are "women's jobs" even though we live in this enlightened egalitarian society of ours.

Also I once worked at a huge orthopaedic office. All of the surgeons were men and all of the support staff were women. One way you could get bonuses was to sleep with the doctors (not all of them, mind you-some of them were wonderful and kind). I worked for the only female physician in the whole group. After 2 years they fired her. She was only the second woman to work inthat office. the first quit after 9 months.

hehehe, i do that and iron the clothes. Maybe because i like things nice and neat?
I have read that females do get paid less than their male counterparts but have better chances of getting a raise when asking for one. Thats is defintley interesting.

press, iron, whatever you want to call, yea i do that. Did that since i was a kid going to catholic school. I dont think women should be confined into what society think they should do. If she wants to become an astronaut or sports athelete by all means go ahead and do so.

i do laundry too. You see my mom was the old school kind of woman that cooks, cleaned, and took care of the kids. But she always taught me to be independant. So she taught me how to cook and do laundry. My pops taught me how to iron and other misc things. Im soft to the fact that i dont like sports and cars. I dont like fixing cars or knowing anything about them. My dad wanted me to be this handy man that can be mr fix it all so i dont have to spend money on handy men. But i always thought that id make enough money where i dont need to know. But i live in an apartment so they do all the handy stuff. sweeeeet Very Happy .

theres a lot of us that think this way. I mean look at Hilary Clinton. 20 years ago she couldnt run for president and now shes doing so. I would have voted for her, but i just like Obama better. So who knows. When people do get over their differences and BS and work together, we as humans can accomplish a lot.

I'm one of the lucky ones ... I have got a hubby that does his fair share around the house, we both respect each others careers and how difficult some days may be .. I do get paid the same as the man sat next to me doing the same job .. I am respected by them too .. there were times when I had to pull guys up for being disrespectful, some I could have a 'man' joke with, but as I work with more men then women, I have to judge when to 'switch off' with them, as they are entitled to 'verbal women bashing' just as us women have our gripes and 'verbal men bashing' talks ...
I work with the Royal Navy, the lads are good as gold with me ..
I did have a problem 18 years ago when I first joined, as I was talked down too, not only was I young - I was a woman too.. so I had the sexist remarks made to me ... and I took it as there wasn't any type of support back then .. however, after a couple of months taking this BS from this guy .. I told him to leave it out, or I'd have him on his butt .. I wasn't gonna take his crap, no matter what rank he was .. he grinned at me, and said ' about time you said something - never let a man treat you like s**t' and I gained a little respect there with him ..... he's no longer with us, he past away about 3-4 years ago during the Gulf war ... but I will always remember him teaching me to stand up for my rights...
I'm desk bound now ... but I still communicate with the boys out there, I want to, it's my job to keep them safe .. and they give me respect, and it is cos they know me well, and they know I can take a joke .... and I won't take any crap...
So when I hear any sexist comments made, I will react, there is no reason to be sexist ... not all men are w*****s, just as not all women are b***hes.....
