Sciatica. Posted: 08-15-07 13:28pm
Ok, so I had HORRID Sciatica with Oni. It
started at like 14 weeks, and didn't let
up until about 21/22 weeks when the uterus
moved up & off of my Sciatic nerve.
Anyways, I had a good outlook on this
pregnancy, that I wouldn't get it. with
all the confusion of how far along I was,
it was hard to even think about something
else.
For the past 3 days, when I take a step
with my left foot, I feel that horrible
intense twinge of pain that Sciatica
causes. It hasn't been steady, just every
now and then. Depending on how I step.
Well, I just emptied the clothes from the
washer to the dryer, and !!!!! I took a
step, with my right foot planted on the
ground and BAM! The pain was insane!
I was hoping I would only get a couple
twinges here and there...but it's getting
progressively worse with each step I take.
THe only thing I can do is knee to chest
excercises. Which doesn't do ANYTHING for
the pain!

You poor thing I remember how that felt
and how my legs would give out! I'm
hoping that it doesn't get any worse since
there's nothing that they can do for it.

Oh God! It was HORRIBLE!! I mean, I would
literally shriek in pain! And I have a
HUGE pain tolerance!
SUCKS!!! ANd it sucks that I can't take
anything for the pain!!! It's a nerve
pain, so it's not like a tylenol would
help!

i can relate to it, i have the same
problem and i just cant get rid of it. I
just try and do a lot of stretching and
lift my legs when i sleep to keep and them
on something. It really affects my
workout, im taking fish oil capsules to
help keep down the inflammation, but
nothing for the pain.

i have pretty bad sciatica all the time,
not just during pregnancy. i lay on the
floor with my legs straight and then flex
and stretch my feet all the way to the
sides. it's hard to describe... lay on
your back with your feet pointing at the
ceiling and then flex them so they're out
sideways and pressed to the floor... i
know there's a ballet position i could be
comparing this too...
i hope it gets better for you! some days i
can hardly walk but since i have a baby to
take care of laying around is not an
option. it sucks!

B! I know EXACTLY the excercise you're
talking about!!
WHen I was preg with Oni, I tried ANY and
ALL stretches possible! I would even lay
with the top half of my body on the floor
and the rest on the bed! Just to get the
pressure off the nerve!
It's just progressively getting worse by
the day. And it suuucks!

I'm so sorry, Sarah I had a condition
that doesn't compare to sciatica, but it
still was bad enough for my doctor to take
me off work 8 weeks early. And that was
only my hip! I can't imagine the pain you
must be in!
This is probably a stupid question, but
would a heating pad help at all?

Oh God, don't even think about the word
heartburn. I ate a brownie the other day,
and got suuuuch bad heartburn!! A brownie
for Christ's sake!!!
My Sciatica WAS getting better. I had gone
walking and the pain seemed to go away.
Well, we had a massive amount of people at
the house and their kids and I had Baron
help me up off the floor. BAD IDEA!
I was about an inch off the ground and
*EEEEEK*!!!!! I literally got up, and
collapsed on the sofa. I couldn't move.
And guess where the crew was going?! To
the park! So I had NO choice but to suck
it up and go!
I stretched while we were there and then I
HAD to just sit on the bench! But Baron
doesn't let Oni venture on her own, so I
had to get up and take over. He went and
got us some snowballs, so it was alllll
good!!!
I'm still hurting! Plus heartburn...I'm
DYING!! 5 months is a milestone for me
though! That's all I keep thinking!!!

i have awful sciatica. i never hadit
during pregnany. i got it a few months ago
i don't know what
triggered it but it is such a horrible
pain. i remember my worst episode was the
day before i went to a festival with neil.
i bent down to do something and was crying
in pain.
the doctor gave me strong pain killers but
fingers crossed i haven't had a bad
episode for a few weeks now.

The Sciatic nerve is close to your
tailbone. If the "shooting" pain
originates from that area, then shoots
through your leg (mainly the left side),
it could very well be Sciatica.
As far as the cramps in your legs, your
body is telling you that you need MORE
water. Charlie horses are the MAIN sign of
dehydration in pregnancy, besides feeling
thirsty. If you feel thirsty, you're
already severly dehydrated.
There's nothing, medicne wise, that your
Dr. can do for the Sciatic pain. As it's a
nerve, and you can't take nerve
medications during pregnancy.
My Dr recommended knee to chest stretches,
and a "wet/moist" heating pad, but only
for 15 min intervals.
Hope I helped a lil!

I had the numbness with my 1st pregnancy,
too. It's due to swelling. Although you
can't see it, you're limbs swell slightly
and it causes you to get "pins and
needles" when you normally wouldn't.
As far as the water, 3 bottles isn't
enough. If you weren't pregnant, I'd say
it was. But when you're pregnant,
especially in the summer, you need a lot
more.
Be careful with the lemonade, the acidity
can cause a uti.
I find that Crystal light is the best
water substitute! They have all kinds of
flavors. It's 2 table spoons to 2 quarts
of water. No sugar, no calories. (they
have lemonade flavor too! )
I live off it! I also get the packets that
you put into the water bottle. It just
makes drinking water easier!! lol!
I got sciatic pain with joseph, figured it
was a pregnancy thing and it would go
away, but nope, i swear most of my
pregnancy with jorydnne i limped around,
it hurt to even sit on the couch , i still
cant sit on the floor or lay on the floor,
sometimes laying on my back at night even
hurts. Ive never tooken tylenol for the
pain but lucky i never did since its a
nerve thing wich i knew but never thought
abotu so it wouldnt help out at all.

That's awesome! With both of my
pregnancies, caffiene has been totally
x'ed out!
I know it's allowed, I just feel better
not drinking it.
But, remember, starbucks CAN make decaff
if you just can't live without it one
day!LOL! Don't make it a habit, cuz 1
coffee drink contains enough calories to
replace a whole day's worth of food!
