Q: Being a Doula

I have been asked by my cousin to be her doula at the birth of her first child in November. I am honored to help her out! I am excited! What do you think is one of the most important things to help a pregnant woman with during labor. How about after labor? I know what was important to me personally, but I would like to hear from you expecting mothers and those of you who have been through it all once or twice before. I want to make sure i am taking into account all issues, not just my own.

Thanks!

i have a friend who is a doula and she *loves* it.

i would say perfect your massage technique! i had horrible back labor and would have loved a massage during that time. nick tried to help me, but between him being nervous and my witch of a nurse forcing me to stay on my back, it didn't help.

what do doulas do after labor? will you be going home with her and helping there or do you mean after birth but still in the hospital?

Doulas sometimes go to the mother's home after the birth to help out with things and assist with baby care, education and nursing. I wondered what kinds of things would be most helpful to you all?

definitely massage! I also had horrible back labor and a massage would have been great. Even a hand and arm massage. Also, I believe a doula should have a very calm, soothing voice. I wouldn't like it if my doula talked a lot during my labor..that would drive me crazy - just give me a massage.
