I have had panic attacks for 5 years. But I've gotten them bad since I moved to this new school in January. I sometimes had them at school in the morning before school, on the bus, or first hour. And sometimes the whole time. It's really scary and I'm afraid it will happen again. I know I'll probably be fine at school, but in the morning while getting ready I have so much time to think and do so much of it. But I can never convince myself everything will be fine.
OK, so school starts on the 20th. My first day as a freshman in high school. I had a bad panic attack on the first day of summer school this year, and stayed home that day because it was so bad. I'm afraid it's going to happen again, but I really cannot miss my first day. My mom can't get me to a doctor until September because of some mix up with health insurance. Does anyone have any advice?

I am a mom,I have 3 grown daughters.I can tell you though,I know how you feel.
First, when I was 16 we moved from Ny state to Florida.I had to leave everything, all my friends behind.I had to be bused to school.I was very scared.I didn't like it.I wanted so badly to go back to Ny.
But I of course couldn't go back. And I was not able to talk to my parents. If your mom knows how you feel, then maybe if you're able to let her know what you go through each day will help.
We moved when my oldest daughter was in highschool. She was starting 10th grade and she was scared. She hated it at first. But she was able to make friends.
My youngest daughter usually had a hard time in school. To her,she thought people didn't like her,but when I would go to the open house at school, teachers would say how well liked she was and she had alot of students that talked to her.
High school can be hard.We don't always see ourselves the way other people do.I used to tell my youngest daughter that there were other girls that felt just like her.To look to become friends with them, not to just try to impress or think you're being judged by "popular" kids.
Maybe there is a group at school that may do something you have an interest in.My oldest daughter liked drama. My middle daughter liked band. But there may even be something, some group outside of school. We live in a small town, but they have a place that does plays. They need people to learn to help set up the stage, work the lights.
I used to and still do write.Mostly poetry.I write this because I can tell you are stressed.I know what it's like and I've had my daughters go through it.
One really good thing is that you are talking, reaching out to people.Believe me,you may feel alone, like you're the only one going through it.But you're not. There are many students feeling like you.
I hope you are able to be open with your mom.Talking and having someone understand is very important.Best wishes to you.Be patient with yourself,.

Hi, I am 24 and started having panic attacks about 2 years ago. You will see alot of negative posts and scary posts but dont let it get to you. Not everyone is the same and you can get over them. My best advice to you is to start going to counseling. I dont suggest a regular clinician. Try and find a physciatrist or physologist. Someone that has alot of experience with people like us. I can tell you that my therapist worked wonders on me and even gave me a tape to listen to while I was at home that helped me tremendously. Another thing is to go for walks. May sound silly but from someone that has been through it, it really does help. I hadn't had a panic attack in 2 years. I have been through alot and if you have any questions just let me know. Smile

And enjoy school!

I have had some attacks as well and I know how scary they are. One of the most helpful things was to see how the panic/anxiety is connected to fear. What are you afraid of? Can you talk to someone in your life? I encourage you to do that.

I used to get pretty bad panic attacks when I was in my early 20s'. Im 31 now and they've stopped (knock on wood). I think it was largely due to forcing myself to stay calm when I felt one coming on. I know, easier said than done. Try using a mantra like "Im not having a panic attack" and breathe as slowly as you can - comfortably.

Sometimes just being afraid you might have one can produce one if you get too worked up. They *can* be gotten over though, so don't lose faith!

I know you said you couldn't get in to see a doc yet, but do it when you can.

Psychologists have really well proven methods to help treat panic attacks, and they really work. They have some of the highest rates of success among mental health treatments.

Call around and find a psychologist who treats panic/anxiety directly or who practices cbt.
