Hi Everyone

I have a brother who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia three years ago, He was given different medication at the beginning when his Schizophrenia was severe, but he condition improved little bit, For the past two years he has been taking Olanzapine Tablet 15mg I think as a result of this he started eating a lot food and gain a lot of weight which is one of the side effect of this drug. I would like to know if there is any replacement drug which does not have weight gain side effect.

I think because his Schizophrenia is not severe he could take a less powerfully drug than Olanzapine.

Thank You in Advance

Hmmm, not sure about that. Perhaps a lower dose may be tried, decreasing at a rate of around 5mg for a period of four months or so at a time to see how it helps? As far as I know, the problem is histamine receptors, which I believe this drug actually effects less than other anti-psychotics, so it's the best option aside from this problem. I will see what else I can find. Wait, found one, it's called Ziprasidone.

I think they're about the same strength, but it does have a black box warning attached to it, read up on it.

Im prescribed 15mg of zyprexa now as well, ive only been taking 10mg a day though, i hate the side effects as well, I gain weight and sleep alot longer, and feel drowsy waking up from the meds.

I dont have the symptoms of schizo day to day, it usually doesnt occur until a couple of months off my meds.

Your brother needs to either talk to his doctor about other medications or research them online, alot of people try other medications to find the best one for them.
