Q: I Almost Burned My Building Down!

omg, i'm so embarrassed...

i don't know what happened but my toaster oven just caught on fire. i immediately panicked and didn't know what to do. i grabbed finn and ran across the hall and was pounding on my neighbor's door. she came over and managed to get the fire out by unplugging it and throwing water in, but it was a blazing inferno for awhile.

sooo... because there was so much smoke the building alarm went off which automatically notified the fire department and 5 minutes later 3 trucks and 2 police cars pulled up.

i am mortified.

my neighbor stayed outside with finn while i had to bring the firemen in and show them where to go. they checked everything out, reset the alarms, and set up this monster fan in the main door to suck all the smoke out.

i feel so stupid.

nick thinks we're going to be billed. doesn't the fire department provide a free service?

I don't think they are a free service. I do think they charge something for each call they respond to.

Thank God you two are okay! I definitely think you did the right thing by grabbing Finn and running out. Poor thing!

Were you toasting something, or did it just catch itself on fire? I'd be worried about the wiring if you weren't making toast or something. Neutral

I have no idea if they charge, sorry. Sad

I'm glad that you are ok too! Holy cow you must have been terrified. You absolutely did the right thing.

They may charge you if your fire dept is paid as opposed to them being volunteers. I would think that service is included in your taxes.

i was using it at the time, but i don't know how the fire started.

i'm fine now but i was shaking and freaking out. finn was his usual smiley self, of course.

then when the fireman was leaving he said "i don't know if you'll want to use that again but you might want to get it inspected". it's a black sooty mess that caught on fire! i'm not using it again!

Wow, how scarry. I would have been freaking out. Even though you are embarrased, don't you feel good that your local fire department got their so quickly? I would be.

I don't know how the fire dept's are up there, but where I live, most of them are volunteer dept's with a few paid members on the dept. Our county charges a fire fee with the property taxes and that takes care of any charges that would incur when they come out to a fire.

All you need to do is call the county tax department and find out. You could also call the fire department and find out as well.

Glad you guys are safe.

oh my! It's good that you grabbed him and ran out, it could have gotten worse and you could have gotten trapped (god forbid) so even if it was small it's good that you ran out! I hope they don't bill you, but at least you're okay!

Do you have a smoke detector? Does your apartment building provide a smoke detector? You should get one. They don't cost very much and they can save your life.

There isn't any need to be embarassed, accidents happen. That is...well, exactly how accidents happen. People fall asleep with something on the stove. Burn candles. Whatever it is, it isn't menacing to start with, just normal everyday things.

I'm not sure about the fire department... I thought the service was free.

Don't be embarrassed. I would probably have panicked too. That or just stood there in case it put itself out. XD

Maybe you should invest in some small fire extinguishers, just in case it happens again? There are three different kinds, I think. I also agree with Ingi about the smoke detector thing.

Where I live the first few calls are free but after a few calls to the same house in one year they start charging a fee (nucience fee I think) I don't know how that works with a apartment building though.

well, we do have smoke detectors in our condo (kitchen, hallway, finn's room) and in the main hallways. good news, they all work!

i also got out the fire extinguisher immediately, but then realized i had no idea how to work it. go me! so i dropped it and ran for my neighbor because i felt like i didn't have time to sit there and read the instructions. she didn't know how to use it either. so nick will be giving me a lesson when he gets home.

now i feel even more like an fool... i posted this on my other forum too and 3 people responded that theirs had caught fire too because they tried to heat taco shells and didn't realize you weren't supposed to put those in a toaster oven.

one guess what i was trying to heat...

Wow im glad you're both safe!

Ive had a few things like that happen to me with jay in here its really scary! Twice my oven caught fire, microwave's been on fire twice. I got through 3 microwaves in 3 years Rolling Eyes Laughing Needless to say im not very confident in the kitchen.

I got a small fire extinguisher for my birthday from my sister this year! Luckily never had to call the firemen.

The emergency services are all free here, do they seriously charge for it over there? Shocked

Yikes! That's so scary Bridget! I'm glad you and Finn are alright tho.
Not knowing how to use a fire extinguisher is exactly how our house burnt down back in 2000. Confused

Well, they're not strictly free cos we pay extortionate council tax which covers the emergency services but there's certainly no fee for a call out as such. I can't imagine they'd charge you Bridget - that's nuts! Shocked

Hi
Thank the Good Lord above for watching out for you and Finn. So very very glad the both of you are safe and everything is ok. TOASTER OVENS can be replaced....you guys can not be............You did teach me a valuable lesson. I have been toasting taco shells in the mini toaster for years..had no idea you were not suppose too. I am writing my own book called "Things I've Learned From Seer Stupidity", 1. Never iron in just your underwear. 2. Deodorant always works best if you will remove the plastic thingy before applying. 3. Just because someone tells you their dog won't bite, don't mean his ass won't bite YOU. 4. Make sure you are putting toothpaste on your toothbrush and not hydrocortisone cream 5. WHen using hairspray, make sure it is hairspray and not room deodorizer. These are only a few stupid thinkgs I have done...........so Bridgette, if it makes you feel any better....you are only humane sweetheart! We love you and Finn! Laughing

oh wow i woulda freaked, yeah we hav ea fire extinguisher too and i dont know how to use it, but guess where they put it? above the stove, so if your stove catches fire your kinda screwed there u cant jump up there to get in the cabinet to get it if your stoves on fire! i cant even reach the cabinet anyways.
At least you got out and the fire got put out. i dunno about the fire department charging though, ive never had to call them, we called 911 once when some weirdos were at our front door at 4am. We never had to pay for that so who knows. hmm

I know I said smoke detector. What a dummy I am. I meant fire extinguisher. Sheesh, 5 hours is obviously not enough sleep for me.
