metronidazole : Avoiding Bacterial Infection
Posted: 08-13-07 17:18pm

okay, maybe it's the money, maybe i'm over concerned with my insides, but anyway... I was prescibed metronidazole(?)5 day inserts for a vague, apparently common "bacterial infection". I've been using them, and spent the 80 bucks it cost me. My concern is that if it is so common, and I didn't notice any symptoms to tell me something wasn't right... then how harmful is it really? How likely am I to get one soon after (having spent that money on the treatment), and is there something I should be doing differently to avoid this?
Anyone know more about this diagnosis/treatment than I do?

You can google trichomonas vaginalis for more information.

It is a bacterial infection, pretty common, and many people who have it (50%) have no symptoms. But if it gets left untreated or is a particularly nasty infection, it will get icky. It also increases your chances of catching HIV from an infected partner, as well as causing pelvic inflammatory disease and other more serious problems. It is discovered through a pap test or pelvic exam and is considered an std. So prevention is easy, just use a condom! But it's tricky because it is hard to detect in men because they almost never have symptoms and there isn't a test they get unless they have it really bad.

Take the medicine, don't drink while you're taking it or 48 hours after. It is supposed to work well, so you shouldn't worry about it after you have finished the meds. Make sure if you have had unprotected sex that you inform the other parties so they can be treated. Like I said, men aren't usually tested for it, but if they have a chance of having it they need to take the medicine too to avoid spreading it back to you or to someone else.

Why don't doctors tell people this?? ::::sigh::::
