Let me just start off by saying I have a complete personal disdain for hormonal BC. I was on the pill for a few months back in college, which resulted in constant yeast infections. I vowed to never subject myself to hormonal BC again. Fast forward some odd years later and now I am in a situation where I have no choice but to subject myself to hormonal BC . . . I am getting married next month and am scheduled to have my period for my honeymoon! So I have to take the pill so that I can skip a period. A friend of mind recommended Loestrin 24 a low dose form of BC that is supposed to nip the reoccurring yeast infection issue in the bud. Well I haven’t experienced any yeast infections, but woe unto the other side effects I am having . . . the 1st week I was very moody, emotional and depressed. Then the 2nd week I started breakthrough bleeding, which is still continuing (I started the 3rd week yesterday). It is almost like a real period I am experiencing cramping, bloating and hemorrhaging. I don’t know what to do . . . I don’t see the purpose of me being on hormonal BC to skip a period for my honeymoon if I am still experiencing the same symptoms as having a real one, IMO it really defeats the purpose. Please help!!!

Well, first of all there is a pill out there for you! There are so many different ones and many people have terrible side effects on one and are completely happy on another. Don't give up!

Anyway, it usually takes up to 3 months for your body to completely calm down and side effects to go away. Definitely the first month can be rocky. My advice would be to wait it out.

If you are trying to skip your period, you should start skipping it (taking the active pills over your placebo week) a few cycles before you actually want it to skip, because it probably won't work the first few times and you'll probably have spotting or something for a while. But it works differently for everyone.

Good luck, congrats on the marriage!

Thank you so much! I spoke with my gyno who pretty much told me the same thing that you did . . . just stick with it as it takes about three months for your body to become adjusted to the hormones. I am worried however about the breakthrough bleeding continuing through into next month during my honeymoon Sad if it continues I feel like I might as well have just gone on ahead and had a regular period instead of using BCP . . . I am however going to do like you suggested and skip the placebo pills this pack and start a new pack instead so that my body can again get used to the idea of skipping a period . . . hopefully it will work out so that I will experience no breakthrough bleeding or no period next month Confused

Yeah. In all honestly, if you try skip this month, you probably will have some inconvenient spotting or whatnot. But, it will increase the chances of it working while you're on your honeymoon because it takes a couple cycles to work. But better to suffer a little now than on your honeymoon, right?

Good luck Laughing

How long will the break through bleeding continue . . . for the entire first three months??!!! What would happen if I just stopped taking the pills . . . when would I start my period again? Would I just immediately go back to my regular normal period cycle?

The bleeding may go on and off. It will most likely stop after your first placebo week period. It probably won't last for 3 months.

If you stopped taking the pills, there is no way to predict what will happen. You may end up getting a full blown period instead of just spotting. You definitely won't immediately go back to your natural cycle.

Stopping the pills messes up your body way more than taking them does. Please, wait this month out. More than likely, you will stop spotting after you get your placebo week period.
