Q: Stool Softner Dependency ?

I suffer from mild constipation, especially now since I've been eating more calcium because of my low bone density.
I recently have been taking the stool softener Colace, and was wondering if it is safe to take everyday. Is there any risk of dependency with stool softeners?

Great question.

Have you tried using other methods to ease the constipation? Psyillium husks work wonders for me on a regular basis. They come in capsules that you take with water and are quite healthy. Just fibre. Or how about increasing your roughage (lettuce, cabbage, greens) intake? This definitely helps keep me regular. Or, instead of eating protein or breads in the morning...try just fruits. I think you'll see a natural ease of constipation...but I don't think that it's a really great thing to use a stool softener for an extended period of time.

You should never take any sort of bowel stimulants or stool softeners longterm. Instead take a calcium AND magnesium supplement and the magnesium will act as a natural stool softener while giving your body something it needs anyway.
