Has anyone ever used an IUD and had fribomyalgia? Did you feel it had an effect. I do not know if it would but I was just wondering? Because it seems to be the best birthcontrol for me. I just want to know if it affected it for anyone?

why don't you ask your doctor about this. I've never heard that IUD can affect people with fribomyalgia but seeking professional help about this concern should be the best thing for you to do.

What kind of doctor did you ask? Can you ask an ob-gyn (if you didn't the first time) or request your doctor to do some research?

I asked my OBGYN. He is going to do some research for me. I just wanted to know if anyone had personal experiences with it.

fibromyalgia would not be a specialty that most gynos got into. If it were a physician and a medication I would definently go to a new one. But because I have gone to many doctors who told me that this disease was all in my head. The fact that he is willing to research for me on his own time and sent me stuff by fax and email, I think is pretty admirable. I was wondering if any women had experiences?

ok I understand what you are saying..you are right though. The fact that your doctor volunteered to research on the topic means that he is concerned and competent. However I must say that it is pretty hard to find a woman with the same experience as you do since only 1% of women in the united states uses an IUD, few of them go online in health forums and probably very rare chances that those who do have fibromyalgia.

yah but some women have responded on other health forums. which was nice. I think I am going to go through with. I am virgin and my uterus was measured and it is big enough and everything. I was put on birth control when I was 11 for bad cramps, I am getting tired of it. I want to stop hormonal contraceptive and the IUD is the best for me. However, some might say that paraguard is just an abortion...and science kind of backs that so I am kind of in religous debate with myself... SO my future husband might just have to deal with condoms until I am decided.

Paraguard is not an abortion.... I mean, yes, that is something you need to decide for yourself. But when an egg is fertilized and tries to implant in your uterus (at this point the paraguard would prevent implantation which you know) It hasn't really matured to any extent, and in fact, many pregnancies end at this point without the woman even knowing she was pregnant. So if you do consider this an abortion, then many women have abortions unknowingly very often.

I'm not trying to push you one way or the other, just wanted to make sure you had all the info.

But it is sometimes used as a tool in abortion. If inserted within 3 days of fertilization. I don't know really what to think...still pondering. Did not feel as though opinion was forced. Not offended

I work in womens health.

I deal with abortion and birth control, I am a healthcare professional.

IF you insert a copper IUD within 7 days of having sex, it is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

NOT within 3 days of fertilization.. You cannot know when this happens. There is not a test for fertilization/conception.

It can happen ANYTIME within 4 days of sex. Implantation happens about 8-14 days after sex.

Yes, IUD's can prevent implantation.

You could have a tubal ligation. This is in no way prevents implantation.

I have had a abortion, and assist in abortIon procedures.

OKAY, here is the DEAL!

BOTH IUD'S do not prevent ovulation, you do still ovulate.

COPPER is a potent spermicide, it makes their heads explode. The copper IONS inside of the uterus kill sperm. With this being being said, it also *can* prevent implantation.

I become pregnant on an IUD, and later had an abortion. Obviously it does not 'abort' all pregnancies, otherwise I would not have had a problem.

The MIRENA IUD thins the uterine lining and increases cervical mucousa. Thick cervical mucousa prevents sperm from being able to move upward through the cervix! NO sperm in uterus, no pregnancy...

The Mirena IUD only prevents ovulation in about 45% of women using it.

The Mirena IUD *can* also prevent implantation.

IUD'S MAIN action is always supposed to be either KILLING sperm, or ensuring that sperm cannot even reach the uterus in the first place.

So the consensus is that copper iud's can cause a fertilized egg to be discarded by preventing implantation (which is why they are inserted to cause an abortion) but usually they kill the sperm? (which is why they prevent pregnancy when they are already in place)

I guess the whole abortion thing just depends on how you feel about the whole fertilization process. Some people think that spermicide is even a type of abortion because it's killing the 'seed.' It's really just when you believe life begins I guess.

I had a mirena, and I'm pretty sure I never once ovulated because I never once got my period!!

But the mirena has progesterone in it, so it works just like progesterone pills, right?

Is that why the progesterone pills need to be taken more carefully, because they do not always prevent ovulation?

Sorry I'm just curious.

You do not have a period on Mirena because it thins the lining of your uterus, but you likely still ovulate sometimes.

*****Is that why the progesterone pills need to be taken more carefully, because they do not always prevent ovulation?***** CORRECT!
The MINI PILL, which is a progestin only method, does not prevent ovulation. In thickens cervical mucous to the extent that sperm cannot travel into the uterus.

****So the consensus is that copper iud's can cause a fertilized egg to be discarded by preventing implantation (which is why they are inserted to cause an abortion) but usually they kill the sperm? (which is why they prevent pregnancy when they are already in place) *****

WHEN used as an emergency contraceptive, IUD'S both prevent conception and prevent implantation. IT depends on what is going on within the womans body at the time. If she got an IUD 1 day after sex, fertilization has not happened YET! It would kill any sperm left in the uterus.

Yup, that is pretty much it..

Mary- AS a healthcare professional, and woman that has a mother with fibromyalgia, I understand the amount of pain that can be felt is pretty extreme sometimes.

No doubt pregnancy is something that you truly wish to prevent, especially considering your health.

AN IUD would be an ideal choice due to your health, because hormona; BC may make it worse.

In this case, think about you! Your health and pain matter. IF a fertilized egg was discarded, it would be far less pain than any pregnancy would be on your already pained body.

Just being honest. In this case, you really need to look out for YOU. I realize that abortion is a serious issue for you personally, but this is your health we are talking about.
