I am hoping to get some solid answers about this subject. My daughter cracks her knuckles a lot. She is 9 yrs old and I have told her to stop. She is trying to break the habit but wants to know why it is bad. I told her that besides it being rude at certain times she can get arthritis early and possibly other things like swollen joints. Her Dad on the other hand, we're divorced, Tells her that I am wrong and nothing will come of her cracking her knuckles and she can do it all she wants. I know I can't control what she does at his house and am not trying to but I would like to give her some proof and answers Confused Thank you ahead of time to anyone willing and able to help. Smile

I have been cracking my knuckles since I was 9. I'm 31 now. I can only tell you that I do feel occasional swelling and discomfort in those joints. Lucky for me, I also practice yoga and bearing weight on my hands and wrists...which helps spread my palm in a healthy way. Cracking my knuckles has now become an unconscious habit for me, and I feel them more in the winter than I do in the summer. It hurts sometimes...but even though my mom also bugged me about it, I didn't change this habit. You never want your daughter to feel pain, but sometimes she might be determined to do things her own way, regardless of your cautions.

Crack Away
I have cracked my knuckles for many years and have never had any pain or discomfort. I do have arfthritis in one of my knees, so I know what joint pain feels like. I've heard all the rumors about what cracking can do to your hands and fingers, but I can honestly say it's never been a problem for me.

I know this doesn't support your argument, but I thought you should hear both sides.

I used to crack my knuckles, bad....like all the time. Until i started experiencing pains in my fingers and hands....im in my twenties by the way.....i went to a doc for the pain and started unconsciously cracking my knuckles. The doc outrightly told me....do not crack your knuckles. you can develop arthritis from it.

Now my knuckles are bigger, because of the cracking, and i experience pains in both hands and fingers and sometimes mild swelling of the fingers and knuckles.....im supposed to get tested for arthritis.

My advice to you is to try and get your daughter to stop cracking her knuckles. i actually started around the same age as her, and if you can prevent this type of discomfort in her, then by all means, go ahead.

if you want even more proof, i find that doing a simple search on the net helps. Smile
