Especially eHealthy
Long periods are not good, and should be discussed with an ob-gyn.

Re: Period Lasting to Long
Hi Poohbear ~ Me Too! I am in the process of trying to figure this out with my gyno! I went without a period almost 3 months... had "fluttering" (mentioned on other boards) feelings now and again and testing for pregnancy was negative. Then out of the blue had a heavy period with clotting that lasted about 10-12 days. Then skipped about a week or 10 days and period w/ clotting started again and hasn't stopped!!! Sad After a trip to my Dr. last week she is thinking "peri-meno" but is running some tests and did another pap.

One thing to be VERY careful of during prolonged bleeding is your iron levels. Mine 9 months ago (at last annual was 16 ~ last week I was barely hanging onto 10 ~ she told me most folks need transfusion when they drop below 9) so she put me on iron supplements + a multi vitamin with strict iron rich diet!

I am getting really worried at this point and am to return for re-check on the 11th. One option she gave may be lo-dose birth control pill which at 45 I am not anxious to start.... will post again when I have results next week.

Well, I know how everyone feels. I have always had a period that lasted at least a week, but more like 2 weeks long. I am now 20, I went to the gynecologist, in fact I've been to two different ones. All they keep doing is telling me it's totally normal, just hormones. They even told me there is no reason why I can never reproduce and everything is normal. So, I guess each body is different, we are just the unlucky ones with long periods.

Try a specialist please
Be very careful with that, i went to a bunch of different gynos because i have the same problem they all told me everything was fine, I knew it wasnt though, i would highly suggest seeing an infertility specialist, they know alot more about this problem than most gynos, i went undiagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome for ten years and now im having a very hard time trying to concieve. Please i urge you to see a specialist id hate to see anyone go through what ive been through, Im only 28 years old and all i want is to have a baby with my fiance, and because of my misdiagnoses its become a real pain..Good luck to you

meds that worked for me, someone with POS
I too could not get PG because of irregular periods. talk to your dr about going on the pill or Provera (oral) to regulate you. Provera flushes you out every month, so even if you got pg you more than likely would not stay that way. I took for 36 months and was PG 2 months after going off of it. (1989).

I too have POS (didn't find out until I had two kids later, but that's all it took. I now have type 2 diabeties and taking metforman/glucopage (sp) for the blood sugar, side effect was my cyst that was living in my uterus disappeared, a bad part to that is your body getting used to the meds and having a painful 24 hours (or less) of the worst cramps you EVER felt (almost like labor), Did an internal ultra sound to find out why the horrible pain and found the cyst vanished!, weird. Good Luck

You should try Vitex...... I've read on alot of posts that it's great for people with PCOS. I came off Depo Provera (BC) and expected my period to come back straight away as usual, but 3 months went by and it never came. I was looking at options on the net for bringing on your period and I came across vitex. 11 days after I started taking it, I got my period. I never thought I'd be so happy to see it. 1 month later I got my period again, and the month after that I was pregnant. Good luck, I hope it helps.

I'm 13 and just started the birth control pill last week only because my doctor said it would lighten my period, make it shorter and help with PMS symptoms. I did exactly as instructed by my doctor, but my period has been going on longer than usual even before I started the pill. usually it's 5 or 6 days, but today is the 8th day it's been going on...

Period lasting too long after giving birth to my son 7 mnths ago
Hi, I am 19 years old and I just had a baby 7 months ago. I breast fed him for 2 months and then I stopped, I didnt have period for 2 months then at the end of December I had a period and it lasted 2 weeks and a couple days. It stopped after that but I still had some spotting then at the end of January I started my period again and now it has lasted 2 weeks and 5 days and still going.

I was reading the replies above me about there iron being low, and I had low iron when i was pregnant with my son so they put me on iron supplements so I guess I will try taking those to see what happens.

I am worried though, so I will see a doctor just to be safe. I was wondering was there anybody else that was having this problem too??

Period lasting to long
I was on the pill for about eight years and it was workin very well untill one day I got my period and it lasted for about 2 months while I was still taking the pill everyday. So I decided I would stop taking it as it wasnt working. The day I stoped taking it my period went away. It was all back to normal for a while but now I get my period about every 3 weeks and it lasts for at least 2 weeks, sometimes 3 weeks. This has been going on for about the last year. It is so frustrating! It seems like iv just always got my period and there so painful!! Iv got to pretty much overdose on pain killers to get any relief from the painful cramps. My doctor hasnt been able to give me any advice, they said it may be Endometreosis, so iv got an appointment booked with a gyno but there so expensive! $170 just for a short consult.Does anyone have any advice or is anyone having this problem??

Period lasting 2 weeks
classgirl08 - I had a baby 7 months ago too and have the exact same problem you do... did you ever figure it out? This is my second period since my baby and they both lasted 2 weeks. Today is the 14th day and it is still so strong it pretty much filled the toilet this morning. What did you do to help? I see you wrote on here about 6 months ago.

always go back to your doctor, always state what is going on. i thought something was seriously wrong with, but it turned out my birth control just failed me and my doctor said it would take two packets(two months) to get back to normal. also ask if it's thyroid related. seriously, i know forums are a good way to see if other women are having the same problem as you, but only a doctor can tell you for sure what's going on.

I'm also 18 and I've had my period for about a week... usually it lasts 4-5 days (starts getting lighter on about the 3rd day) but it's still having a fairly regular flow. I'm not sure what's up, but I have been pretty stressed lately. I've had a lot of schoolwork, which has caused me to change my sleep schedule. I've also missed a few meals in the past couple days. Do you think that's the problem? I'm thinking my iron may be low as well.

I didn't have much of a period for three months. Last "real" one was June 16 for my usual 4 days. July, August and September there was some spotting but that's all. Since it was pretty much non existent my husband and I had "relations" I ended up bleeding like crazy afterwards. Clotty, and fairly heavy, but not overly. It's now day 5 and it varies for the flow. I have quite a bit of stress in my life right now so I'm hoping that's the reason. I have a doctors appointment next week so I'll talk to him. It is getting me pretty depressed though.

I'm 22, and I've been on Mirena for just over a year. I had a normal period a few weeks ago, at the beginning of October. That stopped, then a week after, it started up again. It's been going for 14 days now, and doesn't show any signs of stopping. I don't have insurance, and dealing with the free clinics only seems to work if I can tell them what's actually going on. Any suggestions?

I am looking for answers too! I have had erregular periods since I was 14. Everytime I went to a doctor appointment I mentioned my condition; I was prescribed birth control pills for 3 years. I can say I tried about 4 different kinds all resulting in something non curing. I stopped taking the pill at 17. I continued to have bleeding lasting any where from a couple day to actually bleeding for a year. I kept track of my periods and I had a few that lasted a week or two, and my God that's nice. I've even gone 6 months without a period. I was told I couldn't have babies but I do have a 1.5 year old today. I have also currently been on my period for going on 3 months. So yes you can have a baby, yes long periods is dreadful, you feel hopeless and you just want to rip your insides out. I promise you you can have a baby if that's what you want. I'm going to give the doctors one last chance to fix me. I'm so tired of dealing with long periods myself and fully understand your frustration. I've been dealing with the toss around and poor treatment that the doctors do. I have great medical and I still get treated this way ( Blue Cross and Tri Care). Medical doesn't matter anymore. It's finding an honest person who really cares does. Keep up the hard work girls.

I'm anemic, & i can't have iron pills b/c i get sick on them, so i understand it can be hard to get the iron level up. Food that'll help would be spinach, which is loaded with iron. Also having beef atleast once a week, will help also. Smile
