Drinking Alchohol While Taking Certain Anti-biotics. Posted: 08-08-07 12:33pm
Hi everyone.
I've recently been released from hospital
for a Sistoscopy (sp?).
I have been prescribed a small amount of
Trimethoprim tablets, which as i
understand help to prevent infection in
the lower regions.
I understand that the general advice given
by GP's is not to drink alchohol while
taking anti-biotics, but i wondered if
anyone could advice if it would affect the
performance of this particular drug?.
p.s the perscription is two tablets a day
for five days at regular intervals, 200 BP
each.

Alcohol affects the performance of many,
many things!
But when you drink alcohol while taking
medicine you risk a great chance of fing
up your liver.
Which shortens your life span!

The reason they tell you
not to drink is because it can negate the
affects of the antibiotic, or so I've been
told.

this is correct... it lowers the
effectiveness of the antibiotic, or
cancels it out all together... not to
sure if it messes up the liver or
not...like Tylenol or any generic form of
acetalmenophen.... but not drinking for 5
days shouldnt be too bad... though
yea...at the end of the 5 days you will be
wanting to pound some down... but just
wait... it's worth it

I was going for pharmacy, and during class
what you said was recommended for a
reason. One of them, is that the alcohol
can reduce the effect of the medicine
(mentioned by others above). The other,
perhaps more serious and dangerous, is
that the combination of the two chemical
compounds can cause side effects to occur
that are not desirable. I believe people
have gotten heart attacks/seizures/similar
but fatal reactions to the combination of
certain drugs and alcohol. There are also
mild side effects that won't kill you but
are scary. I don't know what your medicine
is, or what it does, much less what
components it contains, but I would not
consider even a second to drink alcohol
with it if your doctor told you not to. Go
to your local pharmacist and talk it out
with him/her if you really want to know,
they SHOULD know what it would do.
