My former employer closed our division, (leaving me unemployed) while I was on "short term disability leave" due to increasing back problems, also leaving us without insurance and limiting treatment options. I didn't think I was "disabled", (despite cervical, thoracic, and lumbar ddd, and some related spurring), but I seem to be unemployable, outside of the field that contributed to all this trouble. I now face the uphill fight of claiming disability status. Has anyone in this forum tried, or succeeded in this claim? Perhaps this will just be an exersize in futility...

Hello and sorry to hear about another member to the back pain club. I am 47 yr female who got injured on the job @ the hospital where I worked in 1994/95 . I had 1 regular back surgery which didnt work(returned to same job) and 3 back fusions. In 2002 I was awarded benefits for a closed period due to fact that I had returned to work at a sit down job.

That job also broke my back down and have since had 2 fusions ( metal plates and screws). Had to go thru entire ss application process again and just had a hearing with an administrative law judge.

My lawyer(yes, had to get one) said that my outlook look very good, but still have to wait for at least 2/3 months.

I have very intense pain an barely perform adl care and am on types of depression meds and also now diabetic. Some days are ok ,most days are laying around due to the pain and drowiness from other meds. Only keep going because my mind appears to strong to give in. The ss process is a very frustraing and long road to pursue, but if you know in your heart and body that you are unable to work ,hire a lawyer (based on a fee) to get you thru it . Check out ss administrative law judge .Com to get some info or the ss website. Let me hear from you and good luck!!!! Fasholafay Wink Wink

He sat on the phone a good percent of the time talking about finacial situations with his coworkers. Hello, I had a spinal fusion just in january and found out last week at my check-up that a screw has broke and shattered a bone, I have just as bad a pain as before the surgery, and my insurance has run out for me to go ahead with the 2nd surgery, I was told by my work (they do not know I need a second surgery) that until I can do my job (nurse assistant) that they would give me a sit down job, but I don't think I could do that either right now, can't sit or stand too long, or walk to much because of the pain, I feel stuck, I haven't even been back to work and a screw broke. But I need to get my insurance back so I can get this fixed. What was that you were saying about your sit down job? Thanks

Isn't it to bad that people have to go thur so much to draw ss . This is what we have paid into our working years. I just applied for mine and they said it might take as long as 3-5 months. I'm 61. With herniated disks in the 4th and 5th lumbar and in pain most of the time. Now my working days. Are pretty much over. Because of my age and condition. I have seen people who are on disability and don't need to be. As we all have. How did they get theirs?? Must know how to lie real good.
Good luck with getting your ss
