As far as how much goes to the other dog, I think it's whatever you 2 agree to. A lot of times people will give them pick of the litter, or whatever.
I'm not sure what to do with our dog. They won't spay her until she's at least 4lbs, so I have awhile to think LOL. I would be scared of who's dog would be the father. I don't think I could do it unless I knew the person really well. Our other chihuahua is fixed, but he's probably too big to sire any pups from her because he's a mix and bigger than a normal chi.

Open a newspaper, and see how many bred dogs there are for sale.

Go visit the SPCA, local shelters, etc.

Then revisit your conscience.

Thanks, but I didn't need your snappy comment. I was simply asking a question.

If you are thinking about breeding your dog, then you did need my comment. And if you took it as "snappy", then you must have a conscience and know it is wrong. I meant it only as "matter of fact", not "snappy", and I was "simply" responding to your question.

I didn't ask for your opinion. I asked a question to see the experience of others.
You are not worth my time. I've had a day from hell

Okay, well, I gave you my experience. I'm sorry you had a day from hell. So did all the dogs in the pound.

Edit to add: Why did you get irritated with me? Is it because you didn't like my opinion, which you did indeed ask for when you said, "what is your experience with breeding dogs"?

Fine, be ticked off at me, but don't breed your dog. Do you know how many dogs are euthanized every day only because there are no homes for them? Do you want to perpetuate suffering?

Knowing this information, I cannot side idly and let you pontificate about breeding your dog without commenting. Sure, I don't want to offend anyone on this forum, but offend you I will if it means one less dog to suffer in a shelter because either you bred it or someone got a dog you bred instead of a dog at a shelter.

Think about it.

Millions of dogs every year, euthanized because of breeders, irresponsible pet owners, etc. Think about the size of the stack of dead dogs-all intensely protective, loyal, and wonderful creatures.

I'm sorry if I gross you out, but think about it.

You mean just like you do every time you enjoy a good steak (medium rare)?

I am not trying to step on your toes, I just find it funny to read that from someone who participates in the exploitation of many species by supporting the meat industry. Unless you have some sort of reasoning as to why the suffering of domestic animals is any different from that of farm animals.

It's just like someone saying they find physical violence unacceptable but are prepared to hit their children as a form of discipline. Smile You just seem to me to be sitting on the fence as far as animal rights goes, but also acting very self righteous in your judgement of the actions of others.

And Mandi, I think breeding is wrong too. Not that you are concerned about opinions from a moral view. I just felt obligated to respond, as I'm sure Birch did. Call it moral accountability.

I think you've got me mixed up with someone else.

I can't tell you the last time I had a steak. Or a pork chop. Or a hamburger. Or a hot dog. Or an egg that wasn't from a free range, grain fed, cage free chicken. When I ate steak I enjoyed it medium rare. I appreciate that other people do. When I said that on the meat thread, it was so that I want people to know that I can appreciate the taste. But then I learned about what's in that steak, and it makes me nauseous. Did you read the rest of the thread?

I sit on no fence. I have a zoo here I take care of. I make huge fusses about animal welfare, and was a member of PETA but can no longer afford the fee nor do I agree with their tactics. I make a fuss about conservation, I get on people's cases when they don't seem to think their choices effect the environment and animals.

I really think you have me mixed up with someone else.

I am in germany, When i lived in the states my parents went to an animal haven, we dont exactly have the yellow pages over here, i looked in the stars and stripes wich is the military paper here and is written in english. We called every person in that paper that was either selling or giving away a puppy. I dont know if they have animal havens here or what they would be called, so with the resources i had thats what i got. I could care less what kinda dog i got honestly. my old dog was the best dog in the world he was a mix between german shepard and golden retriever. sadly he is dead now. we got him at the animal haven, taken in many stray cats too. We had my cat from 1998 until this past april, when he got out before my parents came to visit but someone brought himto an animal shelter in fla and he got adopted out. So no i wasnt looking for a "designer" puppy. I was looking for a dog. One that is a good family dog. I wouldnt care if it was a mixed breed or what have you. I just used the resources that i had at the time. And the paper was the only one i had to look at. We even called people that were 3 hrs away because its basically a europe paper, so people all over germany at different military bases can post ads in it. as well as italy and stuff. If i was in the states i would have opened the phone book and found an spca or animal haven and went streight there. but im not.

its alright,
i asked my husband if he knew of animal havens or anyone he knew as well, but most of them moved here when we did. And being military we have to be careful as well with the animals we have over here. Especially if we plan on shippin them back to the states with us when we move. So any animal in the stars and stripes paper we know for sure is OK since majority are registered on base and/or can be. Animal haven woulda been my first choice if they have em here but i got no idea on that one, ive never personally seen one so im not sure.

Well, I feel bad I got on your case about it. I'll learn from it and try not to do it in the future.

I know about the quarantine laws etc. when it comes to shipping animals! Pain in the butt! We plan to move overseas soon but it is very prohibitive with the number of animals we have.

If you are thinking about having your dog bred it is generally decided between the sire's owner and the bi***h's owner's dog. It is generally pick of the litter or $(money). Make sure you know what you are doing before you do breed your dog as there is a lot involved such as the attachment you get with the pups, a big responsibility as they become like your kids and the vet bills especially if the vet has to take the pups out at delivery. Talk to a well known breeder. Make sure you can be at home when your dog delivers the pups because unfortunately your dog could eat one of the pups and get deathly ill. Make sure that you have good homes. It is also good to have a written contract and that is if they cannot keep the dog they must return it to you or at least you know well where the pup is going to.
Maybe if you want to get your pup spayed or neutered talk to another vet because once your pup comes in heat any dog large or small will try to get at your dog and if your dog is small a big dog can kill yours especially being small. Plus if you get them spayed or neutered you are taking less of a chance on them getting breast cancer and other conditions.
There are a lot of back-yard breeders that do not know anything but think they know everything. Please be careful who you talk to.
We are thinking of having our Irish Wolfhound bred and the sperm is at the bank from a good breeders Irish Wolfhound and I know they will go to good homes or else We would have to keep them. Her litter had 11 pups so I feel that she will have a large litter, that is the reason I might not breed her because I do not want my dog hurt by having a big litter but you never know!
If you do not know much about breeding then I recommend that you don't!
Is your dog registered with A.K.C? Is it a mix breed? Sorry this is so long! .
Good Luck!

I breed Shih Tzu's ONLY 3 litters per female then they're spayed it's mostly a hobby. I love it. It's alot of fun! If the people change there mind after they have the pup. I take the pup back and give a full refund. (this has only happened once) I love these little guys when people come to meet the puppies I have an interview with them to make sure the pup will fit with there home. I only sell to people who have a house with a fenced in yard. People who will be home more often. Because I don't want the pup to be alone all of the time. I also make sure that if its a family its a family choice. Not just for children who want the pup it's for the whole family to enjoy. I give away puppy packages and also get there first shots. By the time the litter is sold and gone with the expenses I pay.. I usually clear around 300.00 per litter! LOL Like I said its just a hobby. One thing other thing THATS a MUST.. THESE ARE NOT SOLD TO BE SHOW DOGS! Because right as soon as someone wants them to be in a show I will turn them down. They all are CKC registered. However, I do not sell them with there papers. I just let the owner see them, to ensure that they wont be in shows!
