asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 7th, 2007
Hi there,
Im writing this for my grandmother, she's 67 yo, she has high blood pressure 190/110, went to the doctor did the test. The test resulted with normal cholesterol and the doctor gave her these medicines to take Lisinopril and Atenolol. She is under therapy with these medicines for two weeks but no result the blood pressure is still the same! She's stopped taking salt and saturated fat.

Blood Disorders Answer A3253
According to the blood pressure values you report, it seems that your grandmother belongs to the Category III degree of hypertension. Such severe hypertension requires medical therapy. The type and dose of the medicine(s) required are usually individual. Hypertension therapy usually begins with one medicine. Then, you usually wait for the first medicine to take effect for up to 2 months. If the first medicine with maximum dosage doesn’t help, a second antihypertensive drug is added. If the side effects from the first medicine are not tolerable then that medicine will be excluded. Several months are usually necessary to choose the right medicines with right doses in order to establish normal blood pressure.
