How do you get a cold? And what causes the cold? Learn more about causes of the cold, and risk factors that you can avoid to prevent this illness....
You probably know many of the symptoms of a cold: sneezing, sore throat, a stuffy nose, and coughing. Do you know the difference between the flu vs. a cold?...

Q: Barn Work And Feeling Cold, Sore, And Sick

I'm a 22 year old male and I've live and worked on a farm all my life. About 10 months ago I started raising and breading pigeons (sort of bizarre I know) The barn is well ventilated and we have made sure to wear masks while we are in the barn (over the past 6 months).

My problem has occurred about 5-6 times in the last 10 months and it seems that it only happens after I've been in the barn for a long period of time or if I run in the barn for 5 minutes without a mask.

My problem consist of me waking up in the middle of the night freezing cold (which is strange because I often complain about being to hot at night) I feel sick to my stomach and alot of my joints hurt (mainly my knees) and I feel very weak. By morning I start to warm up and my joins and stomach are feeling better by noon.

I think this problem is related to working in the pigeon barn, but what could it be? Could I be allergic to something in the barn? Should I buy I high quality mask? (every one else in the barn uses the same masks and know one ever has problems like I do)

Any worlds of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

Sounds like you may be allergic to something in the barn, maybe whatever is stored in there is reacting to you.
Pigeons carry all sorts of diseases, and mites in thier feathers etc...
I'd get the pigeons checked out, and for you to take less time with them until you've found out what's causing you to be ill ...

Take care
