Webster's Dictionary defines as cult as

1. formal religious veneration : Worship

2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents

3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents

4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator

5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : the object of such devotion c : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion

Is Christianity a cult? Hinduism? Scientology? "Heaven's Gate"? Satanic worship? Wicca? What is the difference between them, and what makes one a cult and one not a cult to you?

They are all technically cults, we just refer to some of them as "religions" instead. Cult is not a dirty word, though it is used as one. Almost everything that has followers in the world can fit one or more of those qualities...

Christianity does fit most of that definition, except:
"a religion regarded as unorthodox"

Generally, Christianity is not considered unorthodox.

There are many religions that would be debatable as to whether or not they're unorthodox, however. I assume from that definition that a cult doesn't need to meet criteria number 4 to be considered a cult - that's only health cults?

Interesting question though.

I think to be defined of a cult it only has to meet 1 of the requirements, not all of them.

Oh, okay. Yeah, I guess that is how dictionary definitions work, eh?

In that case, technically all religions are cults but since the word cult has negative connotations most would not use that word.

Technically, I guess I would be in a Harry Potter cult (from #5). Smile

I always think of cults as brainwashing people into believing that putting their money into the pockets of those pulling the strings is the right thing to do and that it is what the actively want...

Consumer culture???
Fashion???
Advertising???

Man, we live in a screwed world.
