Q: An Ancient Choice...

Ok, here's more of a discussion question than a debate but I think it's interesting to see what different people view as a priority in their life.

The Ancient Greek warrior Achilles was given a prophecy and a decision to make: He could choose to live a long and peaceful life but not be remembered in years to come or he could live a short and heroic life and be famous for all eternity. He chose to die young and be famous. What would you choose? Why?

OHHHHH I love the Greeks!!

Anyway, I'd choose the short and heroic life. I've always been a spontaneous kind of person and like doing risky and dangerous things so that life would probably suit me the best. I've also never been really fond of..growing old. It almost makes me feel hopless and helpless just thinking about it (it's not a bad!! it's just a weird thing I have..) and I hate feeling like I can't control what goes on in my life so I rather be it very short and memorable rather than long and peaceful.

Short and heroic, of course, why should someone suffer all his life if he/she is not remembered in the years later? Bill Gates once said: I am not working this hard to become the richest man on the cemetery. One of the meanings in life is to be remembered by the actions you took, by the words you have spoken and by the greatness you left behind. That's how people never dies. Isaac Newton, Mozart and many others lived short and glorious but they still live hundreds of years later.

What a horrible choice to be given.
You cannot refrain from choosing either?
I wouldn't want either of them.

I'd choose the long and peaceful life, because what does it matter if people still know your name hundreds of years later? It's not like they really knew who you were, and I'm not really that bothered about what people think of me when I'm gone cuz I won't even know, I'd be dead...

I find both of these options to have major faults.
The main fault that both of them have, to me anyway, is death, I don't want to die at all, it feels really bad. Why would you choose either? Somebody said up there that she hates the idea of growing old, and who could blame her, aging is chitty, and dying when you are old is no easy task and very painful, not to mention it hurts your loved ones immensely also to see you go through it. But dying young is also a horrible thing, that also hurts your loved ones and you.

Have you ever seen anybody die? It's horrible.

Don't choose either, why would you just accept your demise like that?

Because that is the choice you have been given. If 'The Gods' tell you that you can either apples or oranges then you can not have bananas. And you do not want to pee 'The Gods' off. They don't like it Mr. Green

Who ever said you were promised eternal life? as a MORTAL being you will have to learn to except your death eventually. wether you live 10 years, or 100 you are going to die, its a part of life. and as for the actual question, well to be honest i would just live my life. depending on what i wanted on that moment i would choose accordingly and never look back.
