Q: Tmj - Ear Fullness

Hi all

When I stick my fingers in my ears and close my jaw I feel my Jaw condoyle seemingly pushing up into my ear.

Does anybody know how the Jaw bone is supposed to feel in the ear when the jaw is closed?

This all started when I turned my head one day and felt my neck "pop". Turns out I had a slight herniation at c5/c6 and a bunch of neck, upperback muscle tension/tightness.

This all causes CONSTANT ear fullness in both ears. There is NOTHING wrong with my hearing. It just feels like there's liquid cement in my ears.

I believe that this ear issue is also causing me dizziness, weird visual funk (and floaters), as well as a general foggy headed feeling that is hard to shake.

I do neck stretching every day, as well as lay on my back with my neck resting on a cervical roll to promote proper neck curve (my MRI report said I have a reversal of the curve - yikes!).

I believe my neck is doing better - but my ears are a pain in my butt!!!!!!!!

Thanks all!

Hey There
welcome! you shouldnt be able to feel the condyle if you put your fingers in your ears. do you have any swelling? I have that and my ears feel just like you said only i never came up with that good of a description.Smile

what kind of docs are you seeing for it? Id suggest a chiropractor and a nmd.(neuromuscular dentist)

Sorry about your ears. Do they make you kind of dizzy and foggy too?

I have seen all sorts of doctors but nobody has any idea how to handle my ear fullness. I hope my neck stretching helps over the longterm. Also I hope to improve the curve of my neck with proper posture.

Thanks for responding

well I guess the obvious question is what did the neuromuscular dentist do for you?

I have never even heard of a neuromuscular dentist!

Hey
a neuromuscular dentist works with the muscles in correlation to the bite. The pressure would be off your eustation tube releiving that plugged feeling.

if you want i can find you one. just pm me your zip code and ill get you one in oh say 30 min

Hey I Am Like You
hello i am like you.!!!!My ear hole is plugged up from a bone moving in it. In my case MY UPPER NECK is doing that. i have a reverse curve also. the reverse curve, pushes the head and jaws into a forward position, and somehow bothers my ears.... a reverse curve is not good you know. my neck actually shifts my jaws.... everything goes right into my ear hole. check out my ear invention a few posts down. you should also look into chiropractic care, or pT, because having a reverse curve should be looked after. when a person posts reverse curve_tmj... i immediately know whats going on. you must treat that neck as well as the jaw. i think you are on the right track, but even knowing you have a reverse curve. is lucky. cindy

I had the exact same symptoms at one point. I swore that I had some sort of ear infection and tried different ear drops to correct it. None of these worked and the feeling actually went away after I stopped wearing the splint. Its a weird feeling to have as it really feels like its in your ear, from what I've heard cortisone injections and having your joint drained out can help this, I believe that an oral surgeon is the doctor to go to to get evaluated for this. I am going to one sometime within the next week or two to see about getting this procedure done but of course I'm not a doctor so I am just recommending you consult with one about this.

Hi
I dont know about getting that done. The ear sensations are caused by something no one really understands. there is nothing in the ear!!! it just feels like it. it really feels like something is there, but drops and this and that will not fix it, because it is nerve related. maybe dyan or carol can explain it better. cindy

I understand what you mean but I can also actually feel fluid moving around in my joints. I have been told that this fluid can be drained so I am going to give it a try, this won't necessarily fix it but I figure it may so its worth a try.

often it is the condyle putting pressure on the eustation tube. You dont have any constant ear pain with this right. IF so Id worry about infection. if not id not worry about it too much--its just really annoying.
