asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 31st, 2007
I would like to know if someone of the age of 78 diagnosed with Cholangliocarcinoma would require any form of pain relief at any stage of suffering with this form of cancer, and if so what this would be and would there also be any particular care or treatment required.

Cancers Answer A3215
Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant disease that spreads rapidly. Its prognosis is quite unfortunate. Surgical treatment of cholangiocarcinoma is effective only in the early stage of the disease. In the advanced stages, only a palliative intervention can be done to solve bile drainage which can be disturbed in this kind of cancer.

Severe pain follows all types of malignant diseases. Pain treatment usually starts with some weaker painkillers (non-opiate) or weaker opiates (tramadol) but finally always ends with the strongest opiate painkillers (methadone, morphine) possible.
