Q: Fenugreek, Anyone??

Has anyone used fenugreek to increase milk supply? If so, did you smell like pancakes or maple syrup?? Did Fenugreek really help you? I really need to increase my milk supply and will be attempting this herb but am not looking forward to smelling like a maple syrup factory.

Thanks!

Sounds like you might be taking too much.. Heres a quote from the site and the link below

The easiest way of using the fenugreek breastfeeding method is to swallow fenugreek in a pill form. These pills are easily available in supermarkets and nutrition and natural food stores. Alternatively, fenugreek can also be taken in the form of tea. But this might leave a bitter after-taste and it may not be as potent as the pills. The minimum dosage that can produce any tangible effect is approximately 3500 mg or 6 capsules per day. However, excessive fenugreek can make your urine and sweat will smell like 'maple syrup'. In case of side effects, you should stop using it.

Never heard of it, worth a try though! I would read up on it before taking it, is it used for anything else etc.

I have heard that eating Oatmeal increases milk supply. There was a link to a breast feeding forum on here a while back. I think Nataliachick posted it. They are a very supportive bunch and really do a nice job of being objective and answering questions. They are not clicky or judgemental.

I used Fenugreek and Mother's Milk tea. I did end up smeling like maple syrup, but I kinda liked it, and when I would go running I would smell like maple syrup instead of BO. not a bad situation! It really did work to boost my supply. Are you having trouble with the breastfeeding?

Drink water. Drink at least 1 glass of water at every nursing session.

The more you nurse, the more your supply will up. Nursing is a supply and demand situation. The more you allow the baby to suckle, the more milk your body will make.

Do not give bottles. Replacing a nursing session with bottles gives the opposite effect of what your goal is. Your body will stop making as much milk. If you do replace a nursing session with a bottle, use a pump during the same time that you'd nurse.

You can also pump in between your nursing sessions to increase your supply.

I'm curious, why are you trying to increase your supply?

As far as Fenugreek goes, I've not taken it - but you won't stink like a maple syrup factory. You may smell faintly of sweets but people won't be asking you if you bathed in syrup. Laughing I have friends who swear by it and others who said it doesn't work for them. It is worth a try though.
